Communists took support from other communist countries. With traditional forces struggling, Truman had to make a decision.

Why do you think America and the Soviet Union never went to war with each other directly?

Answer in 2-3 sentences.

How did Korea become two nations?

Exit Question:

There is more than one way to start a war.

The Truman Doctrine demanded that the US intervene when communism threatened a neutral country.

Japan had occupied Korea, but Russia booted them out, assisting local forces in establishing a Communist government.

Did the Truman Doctrine make war in Korea inevitable?

Why or why not?

American forces occupied the South, establishing a Republic (thought dominated by Rhe Syngman, an anticommunist authoritarian.) Both governments claimed to be the only legitimate government, and declared their intention to reunify the country.

On June 25th, 1950, after several cross-border skirmishes, war broke out. The US convened the United Nations Security Council, and with the Soviet Union absent, they voted to intervene.

At the end of WWII, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan, despite the nation being all but beaten. Their real goal was to develop a foothold in Asia.

Discuss: What's a Parallel? Why was it important?

The US and their United Nations allies were now facing what many policymakers had feared: A united communist world (The Soviet Union and China) attempting to draw Korea into it's sphere of influence through military force.

Today, the People's Volunteer Army is honored in China as the first Chinese army to repel a modern western invader after decades of military humiliation.

United Nations forces, led by the US, were able to push back at first, in spite of the North's Soviet assistance.

But months later, China entered the war. Hundreds of thousands of the People's Volunteer Army (a name chosen to avoid a broader war with the US) flooded into the conflict, driving UN forces back below the 39th Parallel.

The war settled into a STALEMATE.
