Rhetorical Situation

Media

Purpose

  • Medium is a go-between: a way for information to be conveyed from one person to another
  • Media include any method for communication: verbal, non-verbal, body language, technologies (i.e. handwriting, print, phone, radio, computer, etc.)
  • Each medium has unique conventions that influence both what and how we communicate

Design

  • 3 General Purposes for Composing: to Inform, to Persuade, to Entertain, or a combo of the 3.
  • Your purpose for writing may fall outside of these 3 general categories
  • Focus on one specific purpose (or goal) and seek to meet it by the end
  • A composition's design affects the way it is received and understood
  • Some genres and media require different font styles & sizes, photos, diagrams, charts, graphs, headings, etc.

Genre

  • These are "kinds" of writing/ composing: letters, profiles, reports, poems, blogs, instructions, photo stories, tutorials, etc.
  • Genres help us write by establishing conventions (or rules) for conveying certain types of information

Audience

Stance

  • The way you express that stance affects the way you come across to your audience as a writer and a person
  • Your attitude toward your topic: objective, critical, curious, opinionated, passionate, etc.
  • Audiences may be known, multiple, or unknown
  • Focus on reaching (speaking directly to/ composing for) one audience
  • Knowing your audience can allow you to create complex and/or compressed compositions
