The site

The project is located in Aarhus Ø, that is a recent residential construction zone with a lot of potential.

The site

Serial Vision

At this stage being a recent zone the vision of the user is quite bare-bones, and yet so diverse you can see different architectural blocks gaining life in this little space near the harbor.

Cullen’s idea for serial vision is that people can enjoy and live happily in the location they dwell, trying not to create the urban zone dull and lifeless

Pedestrian Pathway

Our group decided to take a route to the implementation zone and take pictures along the way, some zones were blocked by constructions. This pathway was chosen for being a principal road and to see all the different types of architecture to try to link our building to the location provided.

Neighborhood

There are some activities happening on this pier, as some Architectural building differences, there are more planned in the near future, this can attract tourists and new residents to this area and our location, increasing the environment and make Aarhus Ø more attractive in the passing years.

Neighborhood

Man-Made

Aarhus Ø being a concrete pier for the purpose to originate a new urban area every location is man-made.

In this area most of the buildings are quite recent giving this area a modern vibe near the port of Aarhus.

The place is built by different types of architecture giving a diversity in building shape and materials, providing several options and imagination for designing our high rise.

On this “Island” at this moment there are two residential focus points being the Isbjerget, the Havneholmen and AARhus, Bjarke Ingels group big high-rise that is an office site/resident.

Man - made

Havneholmen has 5 high-rises with different heights:

B1: (13 floors 48m),

B2: (10 floors and 38,5m),

B3: (10 floors and 36m),

B4: (12 floors and 42m)

B5: (10 floors and 38,5m)

Havneholmen

Isbjerget is a residential building it contains 210 apartments between 50 and 200 m^2 it was created by two Danish architectural firms the CEBRA and JDS.

Isbjerget

AAR high-rise has a mix of the most dominant typologies, like courtyard buildings, row houses and towers all in one with 71.50 m of height and 20 floors, its most used for residential apartments, but at street level the building offers maritime leisure units and commercial use

Aarhus Marina

Activities

- Watersports complex is open all summer where there is some competitions

- Happening bringing athletes to the place.

- Marina where people can anchor their boats and is the location of many sailing clubs.

- Harbor bath where people can swim in a natural swimming pool and enjoy the sauna that as a capacity of 650 people.

- The theater group 38 that it will open his doors for new entertainment

- Along the pier you have good locations for diving and swim in the sea along the coast

Site zoning & utilities

Site & Zoning

Aarhus Ø is mainly a residential area with few restaurants and groceries shops, our project beyond being also a residential high-rise it is a commercial center giving people and residents in that zone a location to buy food or other devices needed for their homes bringing movement and economy to that location without a need of the residents to move to farther away places to have those trivialities. Try to create new green spaces for people entertainment and better urban environment.

Utilities and services

The engine room is one technical installation that supplies the residents of Aarhus Ø with an urban heat source, but also as a waste solution, electricity and fiber networks. This engine room has a heat pump of sea water, it uses the sea water to heat all the Aarhus Ø urban center.

Local development plan

Local

The local development plan has many limitations and requirements for both the architectural expression of the building and the function of the building.

  • The appearance of the building:
  • Limit for the total height
  • Must have a visual connection to the neighboring building
  • The facade must consist of a combination of

glass, panels and surfaces as well as a facade system with balconies

  • The facade must appear in white or in light, light shades of color, possibly supplemented with more contrasting color choices.
  • The function of the building:
  • Parking for cars and bikes
  • The ground floor of the building must be reserved for smaller shops, restaurants, cafes and other audience-oriented functions

Legal

  • The site is municipal owned

  • A landowner association must be established

  • Outline plan for the area by

This was made to see how each of them would affect the design.

Wind

The design of the building affects the wind and the wind affects the ground level environment.

There are two factors to consider:

Mechanical and the chill factor

The goal is to minimize the factors

Afterward the shapes are analyzed in robot

Wind

Effects

  • The Downwash effect

Solution: The most narrow facade faces the wind direction

  • The corner effect

Solutions: Round the corners, create pyramid effect or add small buildings near by

  • Cumulative effect

Solution: Put buildings close together and create layers leading up

  • Breaking the wind

Solution: Change shape of the building

Robot analysis

Different shapes analyzed in regard to wind

The same amount of wind is put on the figures and from this a virtual wind tunnel test is made

The wind pressure is distributed on the surfaces, and then the largest is written down for each shape

Wind stability

When designing a high-rise, it is important to consider the stability of the building.

Possible solutions to obtain stability in regard to wind in our high-rise

- concrete core

- cross-bracing

- frame-system

- shear walls

Future work

We are currently working on:

  • Orientation and proportions of the building

To achieve the most optimal daylight and more green areas.

We also want to create a good flow in the building and therefore we need to think about entrances and where the public areas should be located

Future work:

  • The structural system

The most optimal system in terms of buildability, economy, time and sustainability
