What is Absolute Power?
Absolute Power is all the power that is held by someone evil or greedy. He/She has the power to have what he/she wants or demands.
I believe absolute power is dangerous and corruptive.
I believe this because many leaders in the past had absolute power. With absolute power they became dictators, and did many evil actions and decisions.
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
By John Acton
"With great power comes great responsibility."
By Voltaire
"Power doesn't corrupt people, people corrupt power."
By Willian Gaddis
Leaders with Absolute Power
In the past, many leaders had absolute power. They had all the power to do anything they desired to do. They were known as dictators. These dictators didn't care if they took innocent people's lives away. They had very strict laws and gave people little or no freedom. Dictators took people's rights because they wanted absolute power. Even today, we still have dictators in our world, hurting and taking advantage of powerless people. Here are 3 infamous dictators.
Josef Stalin was the leader of Soviet Union. He was one of the most cruelest dictators to have ever live. He killed many innocent people. He would punish people in the most horrifying ways. His attempt to change the economy, led to a starvation of nearly 10 million people. Many activists and educators criticized and dislike his leadership, so Stalin launched the "Great Purge", killing any person who disapproved his ideas and beliefs.
Mao Zedong was the leader of the Republic of China. He was a leader that thirsted for power. He was a very evil dictator. He was so evil that if any citizen who violated a law, would be punish and sentence to death. This led to about 4 to 6 million deaths. His economic system led to about 20 million people to stravation. He also had numerous enemies of the state executed because he feared that he would lose power.
Isaias Afewerki is the leader of Eritrea. He is known as the worst dictator in Africa and is still currently the leader of Eritrea. Eritrea has one of the worst human rights in the world because of Isaias Afewerki. He holds all the power and anything he commands has to be done. The people of Eritrea are punished in many cruel and unusual ways. The people have no freedom and live in poverty. Anyone who tries to protest, ends up in prison or executed.
The Tragedy of Macbeth
"The Tragedy of Macbeth" is a play written by William Shakespeare. The play contains a lot of drama and action. It also has important life lessons.
The story is about a Scottish general named Macbeth. At the beginning of the story, three witches tell Macbeth that soon he will be king. In the middle of the story, Macbeth kills many people in order to be king. At the end of the story, Macbeth is killed and loses his power.
At the beginning of the story, we are introduced to Macbeth. He is a Scottish general and the Thane of Glamis. He is seen as a kind and heroic general because he kills Macdonwald in order to save the village. KIng Duncan loves and cares about Macbeth a lot, and he rewards Macbeth as the new thane of Cawdor. Later in the story, three withches appear to Macbeth and tell him that soon he will forever be king. He becomes very fascinate and curious in being king. He tells his wife, Lady Macbeth, about the news. She is delighted to hear the news. She wants Macbeth to change his attitude so he can become a great king, and wants Macbeth to become king imminently. Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth that they should kill King Duncan.
In the middle of the story, Lady Macbeth is able to convince Macbeth to kill King Duncan, so Macbeth murders King Duncan. He also kills King Duncan's chamber men so he can have someone to frame it on. Macbeth tells everyone that King Duncan was killed by his chamber men. He also said that he killed the chamber men because he wanted to avenge them and he was in rage. Everyone believed him, and was chosen as new king. Once Macbeth became king, he decides to kill anyone who can take his power. He fears that someone might take his crown soon or later. Macduff, Malcolm, and many others start to notice that Macbeth has changed. They plan to invade Scotland, so they can overthrow Macbeth from power.
At the end of the story, Macbeth prepares his army for the battle. He fears that they will lose. Lady Macbeth commits suicide because she could no longer handle the guilt of what she done. Macbeth recieves the news that Lady Macbeth has died, but he has no emotion of his loss. Macbeth fights Macduff in the battle. Macduff's and Malcolm's armies easily vanquish Macbeth's army. Macduff defeats and kills Macbeth. Malcolm was crowned as the new king of Scotland.
William Shakespeare is a very famous play writer. He also was a poet and an actor. He belonged to a theater company known as the Lord Chamberlain's Men, which performed for Queen Elizabeth l. Shakespeare is recognized as the most influential writer in the English language. Shakespeare is well known for his creations of "Romeo and Juliet", "Hamlet", "Macbeth", and "Julius Ceaser". Today, Shakespeare's work motivates and inspires, many writers and actors in the world.
Before being king of Scotland, Macbeth was the thane of Glamis and the thane of Cawdor. He was shown with lots of respect and gradtitude because he was a loyal and a brave leader. When Macbeth kills King Duncan and is selected the new king, he changes. Once he was crowned and given all the power, he became evil and cold-blooded. Macbeth hires murderers to kill Banquo, Fleance, Macduff, and Macduff's family. He does this because he fears that they will find out that he killed Duncan and lose his power. The murderers were only able to kill Banquo and Macduff's family. As king he treats his workers and army with lots of disrespect and is very rude to them.
I think the message of the story is, ambition for power can corrupt anyone, even the most innocent people. I believe that this is the message of the story because at the beginning, Macbeth is seen as a innocent heroic general. Then later in the story the witches tell Macbeth that soon he will be king. He starts to become ambition for power. He does many evil and corruptive actions in order to gain more power. He became very evil and corruptive.
Guilty or Innocent
Is Macbeth guilty or innocent? Is Macbeth solely responsible for his actions, or could other characters have influenced him?
I think Macbeth is guilty for the actions he commited. I think Macbeth is solely responsible for his actions.
I think Macbeth is solely responsible for his actions because he had ambition. When the witches tell Macbeth that soon he will be king, he becomes curious and interested. Lady Macbeth does motivate Macbeth to kill King Duncan, but he should know what is right and what is wrong. Macbeth should have been proud of what he holds and what he is known for, but he wanted more power. He kills Duncan, someone who loved and admired him. After becoming king, he becomes more twisted and evil, he kills many other close friends, because he fears that his power will be taken by them.
"All hail, Macbeth thou shalt br king hereafter" - Thrid Witch, Page 14, Act 1, Scene 1
This encourges Macbeth to become king. He becomes interested and curious to be crowned king of Scotland, because the witch tells Macbeth that soon he will be king. Macbeth should have just ignore them, because he should be proud of what he has. Macbeth had the ambition for more power. He should have also known that it is not likely that he will be king.
"Hear it not, Duncan; for it is knell
That summons thee to heaven or to hell." - Macbeth, Page 25, Act 2, Scene 1
Macbeth murders Duncan. Macbeth made the decision to murder him so he can become the new king. Macbeth kills his close friend so he can have his power. Macbeth should have known that it is not the way to earn the crown. Even if Lady Macbeth motivated Macbeth to kill Duncan, he should know what is right and what is wrong.
"Macbeth is angry with Macduff for insulting his power. He sends men to Macduff's castle where they slaugter all of his family and servants." - Page 33, Act 4, Scene 2
This is horrifying what Macbeth does, he tells his men to kill everyone at Macduff's castle. Macbeth orders to kill innocent people that did no wrong. Macbeth is furious because of the insults from Macduff. He should argue with Macduff, instead of killing Macduff's family and workers. Macbeth fears that he will lose his power by someone he knows, so he makes these corruptive decisions.
Those are the reasons why I think Macbeth is solely responsible for his actions. I feel the ending of the story was justice. I think Macbeth deserved to die, he committed many corruptive decision when he was king. He murdered Duncan in order to become king. As king, he did many evil deeds. He killed many innocent people and close friends. I think Macduff did the right choice to kill Macbeth, because Macbeth killed Macduff's family and workers. At the end, I believe the message of the story is ambition for power can corrupt anyone, even the most innocent people.
