What is Hybristophilia?

> What is Hybristophilia?

Hybristophilia is a type of paraphilia in which a person is sexually attracted or aroused to people who've committed horrendous crimes. These gruesome crimes include such things as murder and rape. This paraphilia is most commonly seen in women, and these women aren't necessarily of low socioeconomic status or without an education. These women come from various social groups, and some have professional careers. However, every scenario is different but what remains the same is the attention these criminals receive while dressed in orange. Though there have not been many studies on hybristophilia, psychologists have many theories about it. Three theories are Passive Hybristophilia, Aggressive Hybristophilia, and Biological drive.

Passive Hybristophilia

Also best known as "groupies." These groupies are not interested in partaking in criminal activity but are more interested in admiring the criminal by sending fan mail that is often romantic, sexual, or both. These women often find excuses for what the criminal has done, or they find their crimes not to be true. Along with these beliefs, they have fantasies which include them saving these deranged men and that they can help change them. After developing a relationship with these criminals, women tend to feel safe-- as if these serial killers or murderers wouldn't do the same to them because they are "special."

> Passive Hybristophilia

Aggresive Hybristophilia

> Aggresive Hybristophilia

Unlike passive hybristophiliacs, aggressive hybristophiliacs are willing to partake in their lover's criminal agenda. It can include covering their crimes, committing crimes, or anything to help the criminal. All in hopes of acceptance and trust. With this willingness comes manipulation, which can blind these women from the fact that their lover is, in fact, a psychopath.

Biological Drive

These criminals who have committed such violent acts have admirers in awe of their masculine strength. Equating their violence to the overt maleness of the man gives these women the idea of protection. Perceiving these criminals as aggressive, charming, and who will not hurt them only leaves these desperate women yearning for these men to be a part of their lives. So desperate that having children with the criminal might increase the chance of survival.

Causes

> Causes

One apparent motive is the desire for fame and notoriety in the media surrounding the criminal. Who wouldn't like to be famous or noticed? Another aspect is the history of sexual, physical, emotional, or verbal abuse of the admirer. This trauma could derive from their childhood or past relations. Sheila Isenberg, author of Women Who Love Men Who Kill, interviewed more than three dozen women for the book. She stated that most of these women were normal-- nurses, wives, teachers, etc. but that all these women experienced some form of abuse. Sexual desire for the characteristics of the criminal is also a reason to pursue them. Not only do you get the thrill, but there is also some odd stability to the relationship. The relationship is ideal for the women who had no control over their abuse because now they have all the power. There is no cheating; they only share positive encounters with the criminal and know precisely where their lover is.
