What is a Japanese tea ceremony?

Tea Ceremonies

Tea is a popular drink in Japan and tea ceremonies are a way for friends and family to share the process of enjoying this drink. It can also be a spiritual and ceromonial art. Traditionally done by munks and now modernized into Japanense culture. Its a large form of cultrual expression. Generally a long process inclduing ceremonial matcha lead by a host and involing sweets.

Environment

- Small tea house

- Tatami room and floor

- Typically surronded by garden

- Scrolls and/or flowers showcased

- Enter through low doors to suggest humility

Process

A ceremony is traditonally a multi-hour event. Those who participate are usaully highly educated on the small techniques and practices of the event. As a toursit you come in not knowing but being respectuful. Modest clothing is advised. Also bowing and showing your graditiude to the hosts is important.

Order:

- Utensils are brought to the room

- Special sweets are to be eaten

- Thick tea to begin and thin to end

- Green teas and matchas

- Prepared infront of guest

- Could include a light meal afterwords

Origin

First tea leaves were used as a medicine and introduced from Chinese Buddhist monasteries. They would use tea for the caffiene purposes during meditation periods. It has grown to be a ceramonial process involving other components through the years.

Where Green Tea Started

The tea became popularized in China. In A.D. 608 a new leader in China populated this drink but was first introduced for Chinese buddists to ward off tiredness. It was now becoming used as a social drink as well between leaders and higher class individuals.

8th Century

A.D. 800-900

In the 8th century green tea was brought to Japan. It was not widley used at this time. Reguarly used by Japanese munks only. It became a part of the zen ritual incorperated in Japanese culture.

Evolution Within Japan

A.D. 1000-1800

During the 12th century green tea seeds were discovered to make the thick frothy drink know by many in tea ceramonies. In the 13th century it was the start of tea harvests and ceramics and utensils used to make the tea. And during war periods the ritual become necessaryfor peace. In the 15th century it was common to practice the ceramony with friends as a social event. This is when tea parties started to grow into the culutre of Japan. Around this time the diffrent components of the cermeony started to evolve. Like the Cha-shitsu room it takes place in. Although not intill late 18th century women were aloud to enter the tea room or lead a ceramony.

Although tea ceramonies are not the only way to consume the popular drink it is still widly used across the country. It is more of a speical occasion and something for a tourist to do but a great way for Japanese tea drinkers to express their culture. Matcha and green tea is seen through media and cafes around the world. It is also in many cuisines and snacks. The ceramonial proccess is popularizing over many diffrent nations. To this day it is a great process to share spirtuallity and enjoy the perfection of these high qaulity tea and true Japanese perfection.
