Life of an Oxygen Molecule

Matt and Ryan

Traveling to the cell

The Oxygen Molecules first enter the body from the mouth and the nose

-Once in the lungs, the molecule enters the bloodstream from the alveoli (Where gas exchange takes place).

-Oxygen is transferred into the blood from simple diffusion.

-The Oxygen filled blood then returns to the heart.

-Then the blood is pumped through the aorta, a large artery the receives blood from the heart

-The Oxygen filled blood travels to the smaller arteries from the aorta.

-Also travels to the capillaries, the smallest type of blood vessel.

- By diffusion the oxygen moves out of the capillaries and into the body cells.

- Also at the same time carbon dioxide is moving from the cells into the capillaries

Once inside the Cell

Inside the cell

The cells use the oxygen to transfer energy stored in food to a usable form. Which is Cellular respiration.

-Without oxygen in the body, cells can only function for a short period of time

-To counter this, cells react glucose and oxygen through an intermediate.

Glycolysis and Electron Transport Chain

-Oxygen is not needed for Glycolysis, but must be present.

-For Electron Transport Chain, electrons are used and oxygen gets erased.

-The waste-

It releases Carbon Dioxide which is then used by plants to perform Photosynthesis to produce Oxygen

The waste product
