Week 3 Lesson 8

Place Value Charts

Place Value CHarts

Recently we have been looking at the standard algorithm for addition.

The standard algorithm is also called vertical form.

Here we have 34 + 18 in vertical form or in the algorithm:

34

+18

Now we’ll model it by drawing a place value chart.

Ok, let’s regroup!

Place value charts

We made a ten.

We can circle it!

Bundle ten ones, and put a ten in the tens place.

Let’s show the new unit below the tens place.

When we use the algorithm or vertical form we create a ten and move it to the tens place.

Example 2

Let’s look at this problem.

134 + 18

First, we will write 134 + 18 in the algorithm or vertical form. We will be sure to line up the ones and tens.

134

+18

Now let’s draw a place value chart with hundreds, tens, and ones

Here we can see how our 12 ones, become a new ten and we leave 2 ones in the 1's place.

Example 2

Example 2

Let’s regroup starting with the one’s:

Write a 1 on the line above the tens place and write 2 under the line below the ones place.

example 2

OK let’s add the tens:

3 tens + 1 ten + 1 ten is 5 tens.

So, we record 5 below the line in the tens place.

Now let's record the hundreds.

Question example:

Before I sign off I wanted to show you an example of how to answer a question using place value charts:
