Definition
DEFINITION
A tracheoesophageal fistula is an abnormal connection between the esophagus and the trachea, it is also known as TE fistula or simply FTE. TE fistula is a congenital defect; an anomaly that appears as the fetus forms in the maternal uterus. When a baby with a TE fistula swallows, the fluid can pass through the abnormal connection between the esophagus and the windpipe causing it to enter the baby's lungs. This can cause pneumonia and other problems.
Applications in Medicine
Symptoms of TE fistula are usually noticed soon after birth. The following are the most common symptoms of TE fistula. Symptoms can include the following:
- White, frothy bubbles in the mouth
- Choke while feeding
- Vomiting
- Blue color of the skin, especially when the baby is breastfeeding.
- Labored breathing
- Very round and full abdomen
If your baby has TE fistula or esophageal atresia, she will need surgery to fix the problem.
Pros and Cons
Pros and Cons
PROS:
When tracheoesophageal fistula is detected, most of the times, surgery corrects the problem immediately.
CONS:
• Some children born with esophageal atresia have long-term problems.
• Difficulty swallowing food
• Esophagus scars after surgery can partially block food as they heal.
Issue applied in Ecuador
As in every country in the world, there are kids borned with congenital deficitis and TEF is one of them, however it can easily be detected and surgery corrects the problem. However, some kids may have problems with swallowing in the future, but no reason for not having a normal life. There isn't data that states quantity of newborns with TEF.
Conclusion
Tracheoesophageal fistula is a congenital problem that can negatively affect the lives of newborns in the country. Luckily this pathology is not serious and can be solved through surgery. After recovering, children will be able to carry out the same activities and have a normal life.
