Avalanche: snow, ice and debris that rapidly move down a mountainside

Blizzard: severe snowstorm with winds of at least 35 mph and poor visibility

Dust Storm: windstorm that forms over dry areas and has large amounts of sand or dust

Drought: long period of very low rainfall, resulting in shortages of water

Flood: rapid overflow of water on land

Freezing Rain: raindrops that freeze upon contact with the ground

Hail: water that is caught in strong upward moving winds which causes water to freeze and form a solid mass of ice

Heat Wave: very hot temperatures with high humidity that lasts two or more days

High Winds: strong winds with speeds greater than 58 mph

Ice Storm: water that freezes on cold surfaces, leading to a thick buildup of ice

Monsoon: excessive rainfall during a season that leads to widespread flooding

Lightning: electricity that moves through the atmosphere during a thunderstorm

Severe Thunderstorm: storm that produces thunder, lightning and hail with one inch diameter or bigger and/or winds greater than 58 mph

Mudslide: mud and debris that rapidly move down a mountainside

Tropical Storm: rapidly spinning storm system with high winds and rain that forms over tropical waters

Tornado: dangerous rotating column of air with high winds that may form a funnel cloud

Weather Warning: hazardous weather is near and will very likely occur or is already occurring in your area; take shelter immediately

Weather Watch: looking for hazardous weather; prepare for hazardous conditions
