From May to July of 1894, the Pullman Strike occured. This was a strike of railroad workers that were tired of working in poor conditions and policies. The Homestead Strike of 1892 was a strike at a steel mill in Pennsylvania. This was a confrontation between workers and security guards. After the failed assassination attempt of Carnegie's Chairman, around 33 workers in the mill are charged with treason. This was also called the Homestead Massacre as about a dozen people were killed and many more injured. Workers demanded higher wages and better working conditions which increased tensions. A detective agency was hired to protect others from the people trying to strike. The plant was turned over when the agency was defeated.
Working conditions during this time is what caused a lot of workers to go on strike. They were not ideal as safety precautions were not taken. Children as young as 8 could work in a coal mine. Coal mines were extremely harmful to work in as many people got ill from breathing in the dust and fumes. Hours were long and wages were low. Others would get fatally injured from equipment, and others would become ill. By the 1900s, accidents caused around 40,000 workers to be injured or killed. Overall, working conditions were very unsafe and unregulated.
The Chinese Exclusion Act was the first law that restricted immigration in the United States. This act prevented laboring immigrants from China from entering the United States for 10 years. This made it more difficult for immigrants to enter and leave the US. When the act expired, Chinese immigrants had to get a certification or they were deported. When China became part of the Allied Nations, all acts were repealed.
Immigration was become more and more common in the United States during this time. Many immigrants came from Europe looking for job opportuinties in the new factories. During this time, railroads were being built all around the middle east. This provided opportunities for immigrants, especially from China, to come to the United States and work on the railroads. However, many attempts were made by the government to restrict or make it harder for immigrants to enter the United States. As more innovations and inventions came to America, people from Europe and Asia saw this opportunity to immigrate. The main reason for immigration was job opportunities. New factories were being made and the opportunity inspired others to seek a new life and job.
