The myth of the creation story of the Igbo culture narrates how this people were originated by the power of the gods. It all begins with the heavens being very peaceful all around the universe. However, because of each god and goddess being individualistic, peace broke out unto an environment of jealousy. Therefore, the creator of Earth, CHINEKE, decided to create an equal territory of heaven for each of the gods and goddesses.
The Igbo called this divided heaven a Holy homestead. Two of the gods, the god IGWE and the goddess ALA, had a domain consisting on sky and earth and were the ones that created humanity. To be precise, they created 8 humans; 4 men and 4 women. This 8 humans were teached about multiple things; how life works, the cycles of life, sexuality, and many other important things in life.
Also, they could observe how some gods related very good to each other and started following economical and social rules related to freedom and equality. After the approval of the 7 articles of faith, this 8 humans reached the outside of heaven and went on to the world to creat the Igbo nation. The values of the ALA and IGWE were inherited by the 8 humans, a value each, the values were: Determination, Fortitude, Peace, Unity, Justice, Truth, Trust, and Righteousness.
This original humans created by IGWE and ALA remained pure in soul and had many descendats. This community lived in peace during a various amount of time until the offsprings of the original humans started to develop jealously and greed. The Igbo community was falling apart until the first ever government came to place consisting on the 8 first humans. They finally used their knowledge and managed to do a ritual in order to restore peace and each one's value. They finally returned with the gods to heaven and started to be messangers between the world and the Holy homestead.
Cultural philosphy refers to how the culture of an individual influences him.
In the text, there are gods and goddesses representing multiple things. This shows how the Igbo think their lifes can be influentiated in good terms by acting well and praying. That is why there are gods of different things, each one has a purpose and Igbo act well in order to be benefitiated.
In the myth we can see 8 values, this ones are well seen by the Igbo because they believe this acts are honorable and can get them certain recompenses in life. This is something present in many cultures and certainly any individual can be "recompensed" because of acting good. This values are part of the ritual to bring back peace and from there it comes it's meaning.
Also we can see that jealousy is a very unhonorable value. Through the text, jealousy perjudicates everyone and basically indicates that this value can bring bad vibes and perjudicate anyone.
To conclude cultural philosophy, I can understand Igbo consider values as a way of being recompensed by gods and getting certain benefits for town. The many amount of gods and certain things being considered honorable and unhonorable can give the idea that this is part of the beliefs of the Igbo.
In the literary work we can see certain details of how Igbo culture lives.
First, we can see from the 8 humans and gods that the rituals are something that may ocurr in many occasions and be used for giving pride to gods and find their help to solutionate issues like it ocurrs on the story to restore peace. It can also be evident by knowing the harvest rituals of the Igbo involving gods.
By seeing how the gods teach the 8 humans, a way of life also can be that Igbo consider everyone should get the right of freedom and equality. Everyone having access to harvest and resources is something we can see in "Things Fall Apart" as there is no poverty or at least it seems so. Equality is a way of life for this cutlture because we can see it is one main belief for all people.
Family Values are something that gods teach to humans. This means that family is really important in the way of life of the Igbo. It is seen on "Things Fall Apart" in a certain way because, even though Ukwonko has many wifes, all are important for him and tries to give them the best resources.
This is a family value because family consists on being caring between each other.
In conclusion, the way of life of the Igbo is mainly based on what the gods have teached them since a lot of years ago. Values that the gods showed the original humans have been staying in the culture through time and have formed part of the life of them which is really admirable.
In the literary work there are many examples of what Igbo believe and honor.
We can see in which gods the Igbo culture believe and each of the gods representing a particular natural thing or object. For example, there is a goddess of the moon mentioned and we can predict that they pay pride to it in order to get certain benefits related to the moon.
Onwa, goddess of the moon
Also, in the myth we can see how Igbo do rituals in order to get something good in result. In the end of the myth, the original humans bring peace back through rituals and, right now, Igbo do rituals related to harvest or other things in order to get nice results.
Through the myth, it can be concluded that the social construction in the Igbo culture is truly based on religious traditions and honorable values.
I can say this about social construction because through the myth, gods are always important as the rituals made to them helps everything in the human world be fixed. And also, honorable values are important in this culture such as the 8 ones shown on the myth or the things teached by the gods. We see on "Things Fall Apart" that family is really important and mantaining it is really honorable, also we see that being trustworthy, having sense of justice or other values is really well seen and that is seen through the main character of that novel, Okonkwo.
