Hospital Analogy for an Animal Cell

N.Kapil

2019

Cells are exceedingly important factors within every living organism. Whether a plant or animal, each cell would face dramatic suffering without them. Hospitals also play an important role within society as they save lives everyday and without them a drastic amount of individuals would die. Although seemingly different animal cells and hospitals both have comparable roles which keep society at bay.

Animal Cell VS Hospital

The function of a cell membrane is to be a protective layer, controlling what certain substances are allowed to enter and exit a cell. This is comparable to the doors and walls of a hospital as they control who and what enters the hospital.

Cell Membrane & Hospital Doors

Nucleolus & Data Filing

The nucleolus has the task of holding the hereditary material and thus coordinating the cells activities. This is equivalent to data filing within a hospital as they hold the information for each patient. With this the staff is able to predict what they must do with each patient.

The purpose of a nucleus is to control all cell functions and coordinate each task going on within a cell. This is comparable to a hospital CEO as they handle and control each activity going on within a hospital.

Nucleus & Hospital CEO

Mitochondria & Generators

The mitochondria of a cell is known as the power house as it creates the useable energy (ATP) which is used to give each organelle the ability to do their functions. This is similar to the generators of a hospital as they supply the necessary energy needed and if malfunctioned, no work would be able to get done.

Lysosomes within a cell have the task of breaking down multiple types of bio-molecules, acting as a waste disposal system, allowing the cell to function properly.

This is comparable to a janitorial staff as they ensure that the hospital is disinfected to prevent the spread of germs and diseases, so the functioning of the hospital can remain accurate.

Lysosomes & Janitorial Staff

The cytoskeleton is an organized network functioning as interior support to a cell and creating pathways to facilitate movement.

This is comparable to framing and halls as they help with a sturdy structure of a hospital and getting from one side to another.

Cytoskeleton & Framing/Halls

A vacuole of an animal cell has the task of storing fluid nutrients, helping the cell to survive.

This is comparable to a medicinal room within a hospital as it stores the nutritional medicines that patients may need to be provided with.

Vacuole & Medicine Room

Within a cell, ribosomes are the protein builders and synthesizers that help aid the proteins and amino acid chains.

This is comparable to doctors and nurses of a hospital as they aid the patients by giving them the treatments needed.

Ribosomes & Doctors/Nurses

Rough endoplasmic reticulum (ribosomes attached) of a cell transports materials and produces proteins.

It is like the doctors (the ribosomes) within rooms of a hospital as they are constantly moving in and out, transporting materials needed.

Rough ER & Workers in Patient Room

Cytoplasm & Foundation

Cytoplasm is the fluid within cells that help keep the organelles in place, allowing the chemical reactions to occur. This is equivalent to the foundation of a hospital as it holds everything where it belongs, allowing the hospital routines to function normally.

Smooth ER & Pharmacy

The task of smooth endoplasmic reticulum (lacking ribosomes) is fat and steriod production and breaking down toxins, sending it out to different parts of the cell. This is comparable to a pharmacy within the hospital as they create the medicine needed for patients to get better (get rid of their toxins), thus sending the patient on their way.

Golgi apparatus processes molecules, then stores or sends them out of a cell. This is equivalent to a hospital delivery truck which processes orders and transports the supplies and treatments, allowing hospital staff to take care of the patients.

Golgi Appartus & Deliver Trucks

Flagellum is a whip-like structure attached to the exterior of a cell which quickens the movement of a cell through its environment. This is comparable to an ambulance as it quickens the time it takes for a patient to get from outside to the hospital .
