“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” Frederick Douglass.

F

It is important to give our students a purposeful reading experience. This can be done by using some steps in order to help students understand what they are reading, these strategies come more naturally for some readers than others but every student can benefit from consciously practicing these strategies when reading.

During our classes there are many strategies that we use to maximize our reading activities.

In this presentation I will cover 3 important steps:

BEFORE-DURING-AFTER

THE READING

I need help with reading

I'm a good reader

but could use

more practice

"INTRO" Activities

It is important to catch the interest of the students before reading happens, this activities invite students to:

Spark Interest

Activate background knowledge

Brainstorm Ideas

Predictions

Hook your students

Present an image of something to be introduced or discovered in text.

A sneak peek at content (a passage, a quote, a character description) followed by a prediction of its relevance to the larger context.

A short video which provides background or exemplifies concept introduced in reading.

A compelling question which forces students

to engage with the content.

Connect the content to their lives, the real world or other topics you’ve covered.

Each class is different ,each student is unique. To make these important strategies more concrete Know your students and adjust accordingly.

C

The purpose of this Pre-Reading section is to motivate students to want to read the assignment and to prepare them to be able to read it.

Often young students are not focused if they just open their textbooks and start reading.

Pre-teach unknown vocabulary

Predict the story

Guess the story from the tittle

Use Visual Aids

E

VISUALS so we can elicit questions like:

What can you tell me about Polar Bears?

  • What place is this?
  • What do you know about this place?

Let's make PREDICTIONS

Doing this helps students make predictions about the text and encourages critical thinking when they read.

What the article will be about?

I think the article will be about ......................

B

Pre-Teach Vocabulary

Young students often struggle to understand new words and phrases, therefore Pictures are always great since they are an ideal way for students to expand their vocabulary with visuals.

Note than some learners remember better if it is seen, others if it is heard, yet others if it is associated with physical movement (visual, audio and kinesthetic input)

Once the young reader's mind is "warmed up," the next task for the reader is to interact with the text and to monitor (keep track of) comprehension, paying attention to points at which the material is not clear or the terms are not familiar.

READ

READ

This part of the reading activity

main purpose is to achieve basic understanding of the text.

First Reading

Let's read to our students!

During read-aloud, we share the excitement, the suspense, the emotion, and the sheer fun of a new lecture and its intriguing or annoying characters.

It's important to read with enthusiasm.

Students should work in groups or pairs, reading aloud to each other, discussing the material, doing question and answer, and so forth. This provides the much needed interactivity to increase motivation and learning. Students may choose their own groups or be assigned one, and groups may vary in size.

What do polar bears eat?

Are they in danger of extinction?

I think it means..............

O

New Information

  • Good readers make connections and they hook new information to information they already know ,when this happens learning and understanding take place

MAKING CONNECTIONS

What I already know

  • Is the reading making

sense?

MONITOR

  • Clarify in case students have questions

B

Quiet classrooms?

Some teachers like quiet classrooms, seeing the quiet as indicative of learning taking place. This is true in many cases, of course, but there are some drawbacks to these quiet reading classes: they are not interactive, and it’s been shown that interaction between students and students and teacher leads to greater processing of the material and therefore more learning.

These quiet non-interactive classes are simply boring. However, there are several methods to address these concerns in reading classes by making them interactive and still teach reading.

a. What's the meaning of ..................?

b. It means ........

NOTE:

Prior to this class students have studied about making predictions with will.

a. Can you mention the predictions about the future?

b. ...........................

Re-reading

  • To clarify misunderstanding by paying careful attention to find specific information from the text.
  • Reading a text has a purpose in order to make information relevant to students.

AFTER the reading

This post-reading stage is an important stage as it provides a way for students to summarize, reflect and question what they have just read. This stage is the core of reading comprehension and is a very essential component to deepen their understanding.

At this stage of reading comprehension, teachers should ask students:

…to reflect on the main ideas.

…to share their reactions on newly acquired knowledge.

…to summarize the text..

…to make connections between what they have just learned with what they knew previously.

W-H questions

To bring closure this activity can be done either by working in groups or in pairs

Perfect way to summarize the text.

A RETELLING activity can be done to finalize our objective

Temperatures rise.

Polar ice melts.

Ice breaks into ice floes.

Polar bears have to swim farther between ice floes.

Some polar bears drown.

Polar bears are in danger of becoming extinct.

Second,.................................................................................

then,.......................................................................................

Next,.......................................................................................

After that, ..............................................................................

Finally,...................................................................................

B

Discussion-based activities to encourage critical thinking

Did this story teach us a lesson?

Can you think

of other ways to

help the planet?

We should recycle

What other animals

are being affected by global warming?

In my opinion

............ and..........

are being affected

by global warming

Finalize activity by presenting a video to encourage final thoughts

Reading protocols provide accurate "snapshots" and even "videos" of the ever-changing mental landscape that expert readers construct during reading. Researchers have concluded that reading is "constructively responsive-that is, good readers are always changing their processing in response to the text they are reading" (Pressley & Afflerbach, 1995, p. 2).
