Short facts about Baltic sea

What you have to know about Baltic sea?

The Baltic Sea is a sea in northern Europe between Scandinavia, Finland, Russia, the Baltic countries, Poland, and Germany.

Title

How to save Baltic sea?

4 main rivers are in Latvia

Daugava

Gauja

Lielupe ( Big river)

Venta

Daugava flowing through Riga in Latvia

Venta rapid

It is the widest waterfall in Europe at 249 metres , and becomes as wide as 270 metres during spring floods. The height of the falls varies from 1.80 to 2.20 metres depending on the level of water in the river.

ECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS

in Baltic sea

Eutrophication is caused by an excess of nutrients - nitrogen and phosphorus, which enter the sea mainly from land-based sources.

In the coastal ecosystem, biogenic substances cause massive growth of filamentous algae,

In the ecosystem of the open sea, nutrients cause increased development of phytoplankton ("water bloom")

97% of the entire Baltic Sea is subject to eutrophication, 66% is deficient in oxygen, 40% are areas of the "dead" bottom.

However, the largest source of nutrients in the catchment area of the Baltic Sea is agriculture: cultivated fields and large livestock and poultry complexes.

How to fight the eutrophication of the Baltic Sea?

1.To increase the efficiency of wastewater treatment, domestic and industrial.

2.Clean up household waste water. This means: use phosphorus-free laundry detergents and biological dry toilets .

3.Treat and dispose of sludge.

4.Develop ecological agriculture.

It is important to apply cultivation methods that prevent soil erosion.

5.Reduce the intake of nutrients from the atmosphere. The use of public and electric transport can reduce the amount of nitrogen deposited from the atmosphere.

Environmental problems of the Baltic Sea: garbage

There are 50-300 garbage items for every hundred meters of the Baltic beaches.Approximately 70% of all litter in the Baltic Sea is plastic.

Ecological problems of the Baltic Sea: overfishing

More and more fish are caught not for human food, but for the food of other fish in the farms that breed them.

What solutions can there be?

Fishing must be environmentally sustainable.
