Biography

About The Inventor

Lyda Newman was born in Ohio since there’s no official date on when she was born, she born approximately around 1885. Lyda Newman was a Civil Rights Activist, an inventor, and a Women’s Rights Activist. She lived with her mother which was a housewife and her father which was a steelworker. In the late 1890s, she moved to New York to start her new career and to be with her family. She didn’t like how the first hairbrush was made, she decided to create a new design and applied for a patent on November 15, 1898.

Improved Hairbrush

Newman was able to improve the hairbrush by allowing an easy way of cleaning and it had hard and larger bristles. This brush included a durable synthetic bristle,(like the ones we have today), a ventilation chamber which allowed an easy cleaning, and a storage place for any dirt or impurities pulled from the scalp. These improvements were made because, at the time, there were advanced hairstyles so the hair brushes needed to help the style.
