Group 4 -

St. Luke Class

opening prayer

INTRODUCTION

Loving heavenly Father we come to you this hour asking for your blessing and help as we are gathered together. We pray for guidance in the matters at hand and ask that you would clearly show us how to conduct our work with a spirit of joy and enthusiasm. Give us the desire to find ways to excel in our work. Help us to work together and encourage each other to excellence. We ask that we would challenge each other to reach higher and farther to be the best we can be. We ask this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen.

introduction

Octogesima adveniens (The eightieth anniversary) is the incipit of the 14 May 1971 Apostolic Letter addressed by Pope Paul VI to Cardinal Maurice Roy, president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity and of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, on the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum novarum.

Generally known as A Call to Action on the Eightieth Anniversary of Rerum novarum, it discusses themes such as securing democratic foundations in society.

CONTEXT (WHY?)

Within three years prior to the document:

  • Student uprisings in Paris
  • Political assassinations in the U.S
  • Invasion of Czechoslovakia

context

Student uprisings in Paris

Student revolt that began in a suburb of Paris and was soon joined by a general strike eventually involving some 10 million workers. During much of May 1968, Paris was engulfed in the worst rioting since the Popular Front era of the 1930s, and the rest of France was at a standstill. So serious was the revolt that in late May the French president, Charles de Gaulle, met secretly in Baden-Baden, West Germany, with General Jacques Massu, commander of the French occupation forces, to ensure Massu’s support in the event that his troops were needed to retake Paris from the revolutionaries.

Political assassinations in the U.S

With revolution in the air, the 1960s was a period of ferocious civil unrest, not just in the US, but all over the world.

“The reaction to the upheaval of the 60s is violent,” says Fabio Lanza, a cultural historian at the University of Arizona. “And it’s violent at various levels.”

The decade saw mass global protests met with police brutality; terrorism in Italy and across Africa; the Black Panthers’ escalating war with law enforcement.

The high profile assassinations were important in their own right, Lanza argues, but they were also the tip of a very large iceberg.

There is no better illustration of this cycle of violence than the black civil rights movement.

The Six-Day War, also known as the June War, 1967 Arab–Israeli War, or Third Arab–Israeli War, was fought between 5 and 10 June 1967 by Israel and the neighboring states of Egypt (known at the time as the United Arab Republic), Jordan, and Syria.

Octogesima adveniens was addressed directly to catholics and called christians to action, emphasizing local church work for social justice in relation to urbanization and the environment. It was released on the eightieth anniversary of Rerum Novarum and the tenth anniversary of Mater et Magistra. It begins with the involvement of salvation history within human history. It appleas for help within the midst of "flagrant inequalities" and with "a new perspective on the grave problems of our time." In short, it makes a universal appeal for more justice through Christian action. The local community is called to judge their salvation to the Gospel, with the help of the bishops and Holy spirit. Within the encylical, there is a strong trust on the universal aspect of the Gospel that will hold all catholics together, despite distinctly different action from one local group to another.

TOPIC 4

ice breaker!!

relevance of octogesima adveniens

The Pope’s message is that Christians must seek just solutions to these challenges in the light of the Gospels, which have remained as relevant today as when they were written. It is up to Christian communities ‘to discern the options and commitments which are called for in order to bring about the social, political and economic changes seen in many cases to be urgently needed.

relevance

Pope Paul discusses a number of emerging problems, including:

• urbanisation as rural poor move to cities to seek a better life, weakening agrarian life and worsening overcrowding and inequality in the cities.

• youth, finding their own aspirations and responding to insecurity about the future.

• the role of women, who are seeking for ‘a way to establish relationships of equality in rights and of respect for their dignity’

• workers’ rights, particularly the right to work and to receive just wages.

• ‘victims of change’ – workers displaced by technology and lack of education, people with disabilities, mental illness or age-related conditions, and others on society’s fringes

• immigrants, who struggle for acceptance in a new society ‘in spite of their real participation in the economic effort of the country’

• the influence of the media, whose power and influence were increasing.

• the environment: humanity is ‘suddenly becoming aware that by an ill-considered exploitation of nature he risks destroying it’
