1.1.6 The Final Diagnosis

Investigation

Description

At a university , students were admitted into the infirmary after displaying very detrimental symptoms. The patients which were Sue, Jill, Wanda, Anthony, Maggie, Maria, Arnie, and Marco, and Alvin all came in the infirmary very ill.

Goal

Goal of the Investigation

  • Find out what disease these students have
  • Put an end to the spread of this disease

Patient Analysis

Patient Analysis

Symptoms of patients:

Sue: Extreme lethargy, headache, neck feels tight, feeling awful, fever

Jill: Feels sore, lethargic,Fever 99.7 F

Anthony: Dry cough, Lethargic, Muscle ache, irritated sinuses, fever 100 F

Wanda: Had fever for the past few days, glands in the neck are swollen, woke up with a sore throat

Maggie: Throat has been scratchy, feel like her throat is on fire, her head feels heavy ,cannot seem to regulate her temperature, one minute she is hot the next minute she is cold

Maria: Feels rundown, can barely get out of bed, Forehead feels like its on fire, and is having a high temperature

Arnie: coughing and runny nose high temperature

Marco: Killer headache, extreme fatigue, feeling like he has a cold

Alvin: headache and sore throat

Sue's Results

Sue

ELISA: Positive for Bacterial Meningitis

BLAST: Pathogen found was Neiseria Meningitidis

Final Diagnosis: Bacterial Meningitis

Explanation:Due to the serial dilution we found that Sue was positive Bacterial Meningitis, and the disease found by BLAST disease that is connected to this was Neiseria Meningitis.

Jill's Results

Jill

ELISA: Positive for Bacterial Meningitis

BLAST: Pathogen found was Neiseria meningitidis

Final Diagnosis: Bacterial meningitis

Explanation: Due to the serial dilution we found that Jill was positive Bacterial Meningitis, and the disease found by BLAST disease that is connected to this was Neiseria Meningitis..

Anthony

Anthony's Results

ELISA: Negative for Bacterial Meningitis

BLAST: Pathogen found was Influenza B virus

Final Diagnosis: Influenza

Explanation: Due to the results of the serial dilution Anthony was negative for Bacterial Meningitis. So when we used BLAST we found that the pathogen that he had was Influenza B Virus

Diagnosis of Wanda

Wanda

ELISA: Negative for Bacterial Meningitis

BLAST: Pathogen found was Epstein-Barr virus

Final Diagnosis: Infectious mononucleosis

Explanation: Due to the serial dilution we found that Wanda was positive Bacterial Meningitis, and the pathogen found by BLAST was Epstein-Barr virus.

Maggie's Results

Maggie

ELISA: Negative for Bacterial Meningitis

BLAST: Pathogen found was Streptococcus pyogenes strain

Final Diagnosis: Due to the serial dilution we found that Maggie was negative for Bacterial Meningitis, and the pathogen found by BLAST was Streptococcus pyogenes strain

Maria's Results

Maria

ELISA: Positive for Bacterial Meningitis

BLAST: Pathogen found was Neiseria meningitidis

Final Diagnosis: Bacterial meningitis

Explanation: Due to the serial dilution we found that Maria was positive Bacterial Meningitis, and the disease found by BLAST disease that is connected to this was Neiseria Meningitis.

Arnie's Results

Arnie

ELISA: Negative for Bacterial Meningitis

BLAST: Pathogen found was Influenza B virus

Final Diagnosis: Due to the serial dilution we found that Arnie was negative for Bacterial Meningitis, and the disease found by BLAST disease was Infuenza B virus.

Marco's Results

ELISA: Positive for Bacterial Meningitis

BLAST: Pathogen found was Neiseria meningitidis

Final Diagnosis: Bacterial meningitis

Explanation: The pathogen found using BLAST was Bacterial Meningitis, and the disease that is connected to this was Neiseria Meningitis.

Marco

Alvin's Results

Alvin

ELISA: Negative for Bacterial Meningitis

BLAST: Pathogen found was Epstein-Barr virus

Final Diagnosis: Due to the serial dilution we found that Alvin was negative Bacterial Meningitis, and the pathogen found by BLAST was Infectious mononucleosis

  • Dates Elena

Alivn's Relationships

  • Neighbors with Marco

Paths

Bacterial meningitis pathways: Sue first got the disease from the campus when she visited her friend , then she could've gave the disease to Jill when they spent time together. Maria then contracted the disease from Jill and Sue because she kept eating their foods and drinks. Marco contracted the disease from Sue in class.

Strep throat: Maggie got the strep from anyone that should could've been close too.

Infectious Mononucleosis: Wanda most likely got this and then gave it to Alvin

Treatment ,Control Plans and Sources

Treatment

  • Start Sue, Jill, Maria, and Marco on antibiotics to help treat the Bacterial Meningitis
  • Start Anthony and Arnie on Antiviral like tamiflu medication
  • Start Maggie on penicilin or amoxicillin to help cure her strep throat
  • Wanda and Alvin need to rest and take over the counter medications to treat their mononucleosis
  • Isolate all of them from each other

Prevention

Prevention

  • Stop sharing drinks and foods
  • Ensure that you take all vaccines
  • Make sure everyone takes Meningitis vaccines
