Three Training Seasons

Learning Objective

- To know the three key seasons for a performer and for each season

Exam tip: Do not confuse the training seasons with the seasons of the year (Spring etc.)

- What are the three seasons?

- What do you think the main focus for each season are?

Competition

(Peak / Playing Season)

Purpose

- Performers should be at peak level

- Maintain Fitness

- Specific skills used in their sport

- Avoid over training causing fatigue to decrease performance or cause injury.

Post-Season

(Closed season / Transition)

Purpose

- Improve Aerobic Fitness: Continuous, Internal, Fartlek Training

- Improve Strength & Muscular Endurance: Weight Training

- Training essential components of fitness for activity

- Practising the skills and techniques needed for competition

Purpose

- Rest and Recovery: Mentally and physically

- Light aerobic training to maintain general fitness
