John Brown led an attack on the town Harpers Ferry in the part of Virginia that West Virginia. He and his 21 men captured a federal arsenal and a rifle-manufacturing plant and took hostages in hopes to trigger a slave revolt.

The issue of slavery was about to bring the country to the breaking point.
