Fast Fashion

1800's

Fast fashion?

1920

  • In the 1800's fast fashion didn't exist.
  • In the beginning of 1800's people relied on sheep and cotton for weave and make into fabric.
  • During the Industrial Revolution textile machines were created.
  • Depending on your social class, people had different ways on getting clothing. E.g. wealthy people had access to dress shops when poorer people had to make their own clothing.

1900-1950's

Effects of WWII

1930

  • Just as the fashion industry was growing, the two world wars hit.
  • As a result of this, fabric restrictions were now in place.
  • However, clothing made with mass production (factories) were now more accessible to middle class people.
  • On the plus side, more functional clothing was made, and became more socially acceptable for women to wear pants instead of skirts.

1960-2000's

Rise of fast fashion:

1940

  • Fashion became huge in 1960s; more people got access and factories mass producing
  • Old trends became boring and in came a new generation of clothing.
  • Factories couldn't keep up with the high demand, so fast fashion became a thing.
  • Out sourcing (mainly in poorer countries) manufacturing was much cheaper and faster to keep up with.
  • Therefore clothing became cheaper and more accessible.

Today

Oh no.....

1950

  • As good as fast fashion is in affordability we have gone too far.
  • The planet suffers with too many factories and unethical ways of manufacturing clothing.
  • Billion-dollar companies produce clothing in record speed to meet the high demand of almost a new trend every week.
  • On top of that, there is a stigma of disposability and low quality meaning people throw out more clothing creating more waste that ends up in landfils.
