the atmospheres of other planets

by Clarissa

general information

- not all of the planets have the same structure as earth

-> gas giants/ice giants

- all of the planets are named are after gods

- the inner solar system consists of mercury, venus, earth, and mars

the outer solar system is everything thats comes after mars and the asteriod belt

-> jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune

mythology

small quiz to start

Do you know what these gods are the god/ godess of?

Mercury

Venus

Mars

Jupiter

Saturn

Uranus

Neptune

human interest

human interest

- humans have different interests in planets

- extraterrestrial lifes

- astrology

- living on other planets

mercury

mercury

- the first planet in the solar system

- the smallest

- orbit takes 88 days

- can be seen from earth

- named after a roman god

-> the messenger of the gods

the atmosphere

- has an extreamly thin atmosphere

- non- protective

- composed of sodium, oxygen and hydrogen

-> doesn't have weather.

venus

- the second planet from the sun

- only slightly smaller than earth

-the hottest planet in the solar system

- surface can't be seen from space

- has an average temperature of 480 degrees celcius

-little temperature variation

venus

the atmosphere

atmosphere

- thick and toxic atmosphere

-> maily carbon dioxide

- surrounded by thick clouds

-> sulfric acid

-> trap heat and cause a runaway greenhouse effect

- high air pressure

-> 90 times that of earth

Earth

- the only habitable plant and breathable atmosphere

- if it was slightly hotter or cooler the water would be frozen or completly evaporated

- the earth's landscape is never constant

- the only planet that is not named after a roman god in our solar system

the atmosphere

atmosphere

Mars

mars

- the 4th planet from the sun

- dusty, cold desert

- it has seasons

- has polar ice caps

- named after the roman god of war

- the red color is a result of oxidization

the atmosphere

atmosphere

- the atmosphere is very thin

- maily carbon dioxide

- small amounts of nitrogen and argon

- less surface pressure

-> about one percent of the earth

- the atmosphere is losing mass

Jupiter

- the 5th planet from the sun

- jupiter is a gas giant

- the largest planet

- it has a powerful magnetosphere and at least 63 known moons, although there are probably more

the atmosphere

atmosphere

- jupiter is a gas giant

- atmosphere is mostly made out of molecular hydrogen and helium

- no lower boundary

-> the atmosphere gradually transitions into the liquid part of the planet

weather

-The ammonia clouds are organized in bands,

->which alternate in color

-Dark bands are called belts and the lighter bands are called zones.

-Zones are a result of upwelling air and belts show descending air

-The atmosphere is instable and there are multiple active phenomena

->Cyclones and anti-cyclones, storms and lightning and vortices

Saturn

- the 6th planet in the solar system

- is a gas gaint

- is known for its rings

- rings are believed to be made out of pieces of comets, asteroids and moons

- billions of small chunks of ice and rocks

-> vary in size

the atmosphere

atmosphere

-the atmosphere is mostly made out of hydrogen

-small amounts of helium, methane and ammonia

-clouds made out of ammonia ice crystals

-there are many clouds, jet streams and storms

-winds reach about 500 miles per hour

Uranus

Uranus

- 7th planet from the sun

- third biggest

- very cold and windy

- Ice giant

- has rings too

- 27 moons

- most of its mass is hot dense fluid made out of icy materials

the atmosphere

atmosphere

Has a thick atmosphere mostly made out of hydrogen and helium

There are small amounts of methane and traces of water and ammonia

The methane gas in the atmosphere gives the plnet ts blue color

The wind can reach 900 kilometers per hour

Neptune

8th planet

Neptune is named after the roman god of the sea

His 14 moons are named after lesser sea gods and nymphs

It doesn’t have a solid surface

the atmosphere

atmosphere

-gradually changes into water and other melted ices and has a solid core

-The atmosphere consist of hydrogen, helium and methane

-Uranus and neptune have methane in the atmosphere -> blue color

-Neptune is a darker blue -> unknown component

-clouds of frozen methane
