Going into Depth...

Boveri

Theodor Boveri

  • graduated from Realgymnasium in 1881
  • entered University of Munich in 1881
  • 1885 He began a series of studies on chromosomes
  • Theodor Boveri became an apprentance to Carl von Kupffer
  • His exploration for evidence-sea urchin double fertilization observation
  • Observed how abnormal chromosomes numbers affects development
  • interested in offspring attributes in relation to parents
  • research on sea urchn served to provide importance of Maternal and Paternal material
  • Sea Urchin Embryo are transparent-easier analyzation and tracing of development

Sutton

Walter Sutton

  • studied grasshoppers
  • connected the phenomena of meiosis, segregation, and independent assortment with the chromosomal theory.
  • Walter Sutton graduated from Kansas University in 1896
  • received a master's degree
  • changed education from engineering to the medical field
  • published "The Spermatogonial Division of Brachystola magna" in 1906

What happened during their time?

Historical Connections

Life after College

Life After College

Life After College

  • During college, Boveri wrote his disteration: Beiträge zur Kenntnis der Nervenfasern
  • he was awarded a doctorate, a Lamont-Stipendium Fellowship
  • shortly after his 30th birthday, was offered the opputurnity as a Professor at Wurzberg, Germany, in Zoology and Comparitive Anatomy
  • beginning in 1890, Boveri had severe health issues
  • Boveri was able to reach two additional, important conclusions about the nature of hereditary processes

  • In the summer of 1903, Sutton stopped studying developmental biology to work in the Kansas oil fields to earn money for medical school
  • Sutton received his MD degree in 1907 & began an internship at Roosevelt Hospital in New York
  • Sutton became associate professor of Surgery at University of Kansas
  • awarded an affiliation at Bell Memorial Hospital
  • In 1915, the military hired Sutton as part of the surgical staff during WWI
  • he became chief of the surgical staff and soon died after his tour

Research

  • Both Boveri and Sutton researched chromosomes and their heredity
  • Sutton followed and continued Boveri's studies
  • Boveri began to understand the events that take place in the nucleus of the cell
  • The significance of Mendel and Boveri's work emphasized by Sutton
  • Boveri linked chromosomes and heredity together
  • Boveri took Flemming's findings to provide evidence of germ cell linage
  • Boveri observed Ascaris/simple chromosome display
  • demonstatred each chromosome carried heriditary information

Conclusions

Conclusions

  • Sutton described the configurations of individual chromosomes in cells at various stages of meiosis
  • Sutton was able to identify 11 pairs of chromosomes - also discovered a single chromosome that is presumed to be a sex chromosome

  • Boveri brought the intial connection between chromomes and the path to our knowedge of Meiosis and fertilization (Haploid to Diploid)
