5 Essential Elements of PYP

Introduction

What is our presentation about?

5 Essential Elements

C

1.Concepts

2. Skills

3. Knowledge

4. Attitudes

5. Action

Concepts

8 key concepts of PYP

Form: What is it like?

Function: How does it work?

Causation: Why is it like it is?

Change: How is it changing?

Connection: How is it connected to other things?

Perspective: What are the points of view?

Responsibility: What is our responsibility?

Reflection: How do we know?

The PYP curriculum is concept-driven and revolves around the following:

  • Promoting understanding by exploring prior knowledge of students

  • Exploration and re-exploration of concepts

  • Transcending boundaries to create deep conceptual understanding from a variety of perspectives

  • Concepts support and structure inquiries and provide a context for understanding knowledge, skills and attitudes

  • Critical thinking is fostered

  • Transdisciplinary to increase coherence across the curriculum

  • Concepts provide a structure for exploring content, giving it shape, direction and purpose

Connection between international-mindedness and the concepts

It allows students to make real-world authentic connections within contexts, supporting thinking and learning within an inquiry setting, encompassing the ‘whole child"

The fact that the essential elements serve to nurture the learner profiles further supports thinking and learning about the world and provides a platform for supporting the internationally-minded ideal

Skills

S

• Thinking Skills

• Social Skills

• Communication Skills

• Self-Management Skills

• Research skills

  • Each skill has sub skills that are acquired and applied throughout the programme

  • They are valuable in ensuring that teaching and learning is occurring both in and outside the classroom

  • They are valuable in equipping students for lifelong learning

Students acquire knowledge and skills in authentic, meaningful contexts that transcend the boundaries of traditional subjects

Knowledge

The transdisciplinary themes within the element of Knowledge are:

1. Who we are

2. Where we are in place and time

3. How we express ourselves

4. How the world works

5. How we organise ourselves

6. Sharing the planet

Development of International- mindedness

  • These themes promote a conduit for inquiry through exploration of both local and global perspectives with the transdisciplinary themes as the intermediary

  • Knowledge is a corner stone for aligning the curriculum and has global significance as a driver for building international-mindedness

  • With skilled administration of the transdisciplinary themes, students become exposed to opportunities to explore commonalities and contribute to the common ground that unifies us globally in social, economic and environmental ways

Attitudes

The IB system recognizes ‘attitudes’ as a vital part of self-development. It suggests that knowledge and concepts cannot alone make an international minded person. It is indeed important to generate good values within individuals so that they can benefit the people and the environment around them

12 PYP Attitudes

An international mind is not just intelligent and knowledgeable but it also possesses certain attitudes that differentiate it from others

People who practice these attitudes perform better in life because they are maintaining a balance between their personal learning and the world around them

Development of International mindedness

Being tolerant, cooperative and empathetic in difficult situations allows and individual to respectfully interact with others. These attitudes can avoid problems or individuals and ensure a peaceful life

Action!

What do we mean by action?

PYP schools give an opportunity to students to take actions and then reflect on them

Successful inquiry will lead to responsible action, initiated by the student

Action will extend the student’s learning

Taking action allows students to extend their learning beyond the classroom and see how concepts fit into a bigger picture/the real world

Action should be seen as a voluntary demonstration of a student’s empowerment

Taking action allows students to grow socially, work collaboratively, as well as develop problem-solving skills and allow learners to think critically

The role of action in creating a coherent curriculum

The element of action is what will make our future scientists, activists, researchers, and leaders. So I believe the essential element of action is extremely important in making a well-balanced, coherent curriculum
