The BIG SIX Research

Model

What is The Big Six?

The big six is a research model that consists of six steps created by Mike Eisenberg. The big six supports 21st century learning and builds information literacy skills. Importantly, the big six process can be applied in every subject. Actually, we use the big six process in our everyday lives without even realizing it.

Overview

Big 6

The Big Six

The Big Six Model is a six step process that helps students. It is a process that empowers students to navigate both academic and read world problems. It is a process that allows students to work on a project from start to finish independently by allowing students to have a road map that gives them ownership of the learning process . The Big 6 is not extra work for the teacher. It is a tool to help students work independently by using the Big 6 steps to guide their work.

TASK DEFINITION

1.1 Define the problem

1.2 Identify the information needed

1

TASK DEFINITION

Define the Task

  • Students should ask themselves, "what am I supposed to do?"

  • This is the easiest part because teachers usually give the student instructions.

Define the Task

INFORMATION SEEKING STRATEGIES

2.1 Determine all possible sources

2.2 Select the best sources

2

INFORMATION SEEKING STRATEGIES

Find Sources

Find Information Sources

  • Students should brainstorm and create a list of possible sources.

  • i.e. Encyclopedia Britannica, Destiny Discover, GALILEO, Google Scholar, etc.

LOCATION & ACCESS

3.1 Locate Sources

3.2 Find Information within Sources

3

LOCATION & ACCESS

Access Sources

Access the Best Sources

  • Students access the sources and look for relevant information.

  • i.e. students log into Destiny Discover, type in search terms, and scan for articles that are relevant

USE OF INFORMATION

4.1 Engage (read, hear, view)

4.2 Extract Relevant Quality Information

4

USE OF INFORMATION

Read and Extract Info

Read & Extract Relevant Info

  • Students should as themselves, "what information is useful?"

  • i.e. take notes, paraphrase, and identify direct quotes

SYNTHESIS

5.1 Organize

5.2 Present

5

SYNTHESIS

Create & Present

Create & Present

  • Students should ask themselves, "how do I want to organize and present my newly gained knowledge?"

  • i.e. poster board, research paper, power point, video, board game, etc.

EVALUATION

6.1 Judge the Result

6.2 Judge the Process

6

EVALUATION

Reflect

Reflect

  • Students should ask themselves, "is this my best work, what could I have done differently?"

  • i.e. teacher provided reflection form, student initiated self-reflection, peer feedback and self reflection, etc.

Super 3

The Super 3...

Is a simpler version of the Big 6 that can be used for younger learners. It is appropriate for Pre-K through third grade and other grades when the Big 6 is too rigorous. Also, the Super 3 serves as a great way to transition to the Big 6.
