Design Process of roller coasters

The Design Process

A series of steps that someone can use to guide them through making something better or solve problems. Almost everything goes through this process, including roller coasters

  • Define problem/ goal
  • Research
  • Imagine possible solutions
  • choose a solution
  • create and test prototype

The Design Process of roller coasters

History/background

Background

Background

  • The first idea of a roller coaster was in the 1400's in Russia
  • Ice sledding was a very popular sport
  • From this idea of the sled, they eventually added wheels to it

The first roller coaster

Switchback Railway

Switchback Railway

  • 1884
  • In Coney Island in Brooklyn
  • Wooden
  • Went 6 mph and had a max height of 50 feet
  • Cost a nickel to ride
  • Eventually made $600 a day

First steel roller coaster

Matterhorn Bobsled

  • 1959
  • Located in Disneyland in Anaheim, California
  • Went 27 mph and had a max height of 147

Matterhorn Bobsled

The problem

Problem

  • Economic hardships (1930's) and wartime material shortage (1940's)
  • Amusement parks were getting shut down resulting in poor conditions of the roller coasters
  • These roller coasters were not fitting for everyone
  • The population wanted better roller coasters for more of a thrill

Idea

  • Switching to steel from wood

Results

  • Preventing accidents
  • Better condition of roller coasters
  • More roller coasters can be made

Idea

Research

Research

Construction workers of these roller coasters found that steel roller coasters allow for

  • Smoother rides
  • Stronger structures of the roller coasters
  • production accuracy for high speeds
  • More complex shapes

Developing a design

Design

The goal was to make a roller coaster that was fit for most ages and had enough thrill, though they had a lot of consider

What they had to consider

  • what kind of users will use the ride
  • how much space will be needed for the ride and how much space is provided
  • how much their budget is for materials

Model

Model

Designers of the first steel roller coaster

  • Walt Disney Imagineering
  • Arrow Dynamics

  • 1884
  • They made a roller coaster fitting for most ages with a budget
  • The roller coaster was successful throughout the years
  • This was the dawn of something new

Testing it out

Test

  • For testing out the "Matterhorn Bobsled", I am sure they ran plenty of tests using test dummies
  • Though everyday roller coasters are being tested and improved for better functions and future improvements and tips for other roller coasters
