Page 17, paragraph 2 uses Logos to display the emotion of not knowing where your food comes from when you purchase it from the grocery store. Pollan says, " you have to be a fairly determined ecological detective to follow where your food is from." If you don't know where your food is coming from, you probably shouldn't consume it.
Micheal Pollan uses Ethos and CER on page 20 to present his claim that "You are what you eat...", he uses evidence from scientist to back up his claim proving his credibility to the reader and to explain his claim such as "The science works by identifying stable isotopes of carbon in human tissues that bears the signatures, in effect, of the different types of plants..." Then, he provides reasoning and explains why the evidence makes sense "The intricacies pf this process are worth following, since they go some distance towards explaining how corn could have conquered our diet." He used Ethos by establishing his creditability with the help of scientist. .Using Ethos and CER helps to persuade and convince the reader.
On page 45-47, Pollan talks about how more than half of the worlds food is grown using "synthetic fertility no longer [needed to] cover crops to capture a whole years worth of sunlight"(Pollan, Page 45). It has gotten to the point in our culture where farmers aren't even using sunlight to grow crops, but instead using artificial nitrogen. Fear is instilled in the reader when Pollan mentions that humans are now regularly ingesting chemicals designed by a man who aided in the making of bombs during World War II. To add distress to the situation, not only is artificial nitrogen being used in modern day agriculture but pesticides(a substance used to kill insects and other harmful organisms) are being used. The knowlegdge that each of us are walking around with unnatural substances in our body gives the reader a sense of panic.
Do Authors need a purpose when creating a claim, evidence, and reasoning?
How does Pollen use CER for a wide audience?
How does Pollen use rhetorical devices to advance his view?
Essential Question 1
An author definitely needs a purpose when using CER, if they have no purpose then what are they making a claim to? If Pollen were to tell us that corn is bad, but never explain why the corn we use is so awful, his purpose would be defeated. When he says that our country is in a national eating disorder, he backs it up by telling us why we are becoming so unhealthy
Pollen uses CER for a wide audience by making his language vast and not specific to any one group of people. He uses our entire country as an example vs only using a city, or smaller group of people. This is extremely smart because this way, everyone can take something out of his book.
Pollen uses rhetorical devices to advance his point of view througout the whole book. As we defined in all our previous slides, he uses Ethos, Logos, and Pathos with almost every claim he makes, from Americans usuing corn in everything, to how our livestock is raised, he persuades us and backs himself up.
