- Tobacco was used in addivtive substances so people were buying it in bulk.

- In some parts of the world it was used as a currency substitute.

- As tobacco was mainly farmed by slave labour, farmers didn't have to pay for labour.

- English sailors recieved it from English explorer Sir John Hawkins in the 1580s.

- By the 17th century through the spread of sailors and their tobacco habits it spread to all of Europe.
