What is a Drawbridge?

What Is A Drawbridge

Why the name?

Why It Is called A Drawbridge?

Wondering about the name? Well it is pretty straight forward. It is called a drawbridge because according to vocabulary.com “A drawbridge gets its name from the fact that it could be "drawn up," or raised”.

What Is it?

What is it?

A drawbridge is called a drawbridge for the reason that it is able to be pulled up by a mechanic system in order to let boat that are larger pass under the bridge. They also allow the flow of traffic to continue.

When are they used?

People use drawbridges for a mutlitude of reasons. One of them being used for wider and or deeper rivers. If bigger boats need under the boat they are able to get under by the bridge simpily lifting up. Or over highways for larger vehicles to pass under.

Types of Drawbridges

Types Of Drawbridges

Believe it or not there is actually more than one type of drawbridge.

Types Of Drawbridges

Types Of Drawbridge

Lift Bridge - This is made up of wooden boards called planks that are held together by very strong rope to then be raised and lowered. However modern lift bridges are normally lifted by machines instead of rope.

Bascule - This bridge is normally lifted up in the air vertically. This causes it to look like the letter V. These Bridges are not as strong so only a certain amount of trucks are allowed on and no heavy trucks.

The next bridge (and Possibly the coolest) Is called a swing bridge. The name gives it away. It swing around letting the boats pass under.

Types Of Drawbridges

Types Of Drawbridge

All three of the bridges (Lift Bridge, Bascule, and finally the Swing Bridge) are all imporntant. The reason for this is because of the fact that all three take up different amounts of space and also require different areas.

Transportation

Having a bridge will make it easier to move over rivers.

Traffic

Traffic

This will make it easy to keep traffic flowing and this will also allow people to cross over large bodies of water.

Because of the two planks it is able lift up to allow bigger boats and trucks to pass under.

Cost

Cost

The cost of the drawbridge is smaller than the cost of a normal bridge. This is because of the fact that you do not need as much material that you would normally use to make a bridge as you need when it comes to a normal bridge. The cost of our bridge is only $1,500,000.

Bridge Safety

When there is a drawbridge ahead make sure you approach with caution.

Make sure that you are ready to be stopped.

The bridge is not a race track.

People should always stay on the sidewalk.

Never fish under or near a drawbridge.

No time is saved by trying to beat a drawbridge.

Make sure to always be smart when on a drawbridge.

Why A Drawbridge?

Why?

The main reason that it would be best to make a drawbridge is having one would make it easy to travel over water.

If we had a bridge we would be able to also let larger boats cross under them by simply raising the main part of the bridge.

Another good thing is that it is easy for the flow of traffic.

Description

A Drawbridge will include simple pieces like…

A center piece that is the street.

Hinges that are to go up to allow bigger trucks and boats to go under..

A top piece that will allow cars and pedestrians to cross.

Bace pillars that hold the bridge togher.

History

History Of Drawbridges

When you think of the past you will most likely think about castles with kings or queens living in them. In fairytales there are always moats surrounding the castles. There is also a locked bridge to get across.

History Of Drawbridges

What if a big boat needed to go under the bridge but did not fit? Well there is something that could help that problem. These Drawbridges allow bigger boats to go under and get to the other side of the bridge.
