1668 - The Beginning

  • Friedrich Jacob Merck buys a pharmacy in Darmstadt ("Engel-Apotheke")
  • medicine is composed by natural ingredients
  • joins the competition with other pharmacies
  • pharmacists are facing more responsibility

1782-1816 the progress in pharmacy

  • Johann Anton Merck is the first one to look beyond the traditional pharmaceutical education
  • after having completed his education having become an expert in his sphere, Emanuel Merck takes over the "Engel-Apotheke"
  • explicitly, he studies the "alkaloids" and discovers "morphine"

1816-1850 pharmacy becomes scientific form of art

  • pharmacy is no longer an empirical "craft" - Emanuel Merck challenges the world of chemistry and biology with his findings on morphine
  • first relationships with other european countries
  • Merck is preparing fundamental changes in the understanding of chemistry
  • Merck is establishing highest quality standards for new pharmaceutical products (many national & international awards)
  • 1850: Emanuel Merck settles the company E.Merck with his sons Carl, Georg and Wilhelm Merck

1862- Working Together & Expanding

  • pruduct supply and number of workers rises

  • beginning of the Cocain-Production used for anesthesia & scientific research

  • Merck in Darmstadt produces about 67 tons of cocaine ; after the negative aspects are outlawed, Merck will continue working on sythetical changes in that molecule

  • after 1883 Merck expands its branches to Paris, Brussels, Vienna, Budapest and Stockholm with their warehouses - about 1900 Merck has expanded to every continent

  • 1887: Founding of the representative office in New York - 1889 it becomes a trading company "Merck & Co."

1888 - Quality & new Technologies

  • quality standards for chemical reagents are examined and raised; a controlling laboratory is opened

  • Merck is starting its work in the sphere of biotechnology - research in biochemical processes in Darmstadt: discovery of the lactic acid bacteria

  • 1895 Merck establishes a bacterialogical department: production of dignostics for tuberculosis and typhus, streptococci and diphtheria

  • the liquid crystals: a first discovery by Friedrich Reinitzer & Otto Lehmann

  • first teps in the analytic methodology in chromatography

1917 - Living the Resposibilty

  • Social Responsibility and high standards are the a great priority for Merck

  • Merck & Co. becomes an autonomous american company

  • Merck develops the first pesticides for the viniculture

  • plantal and animal coal is produced as pills for treating poisonings

  • 1927 Merck sells the first standardized vitamin-D pill "Vigantol"®

  • 1933: first iridescent pigments for cosmetics

  • 1934: the first vitamin-C-pill Cebion® was brought to the market

1946 - Take it on together

  • recovery of the company and its entities after the World War

  • Merck is part of the German Economy Boom in the 60ies

  • 1953 Digimerck® - a medicine for the treatment of heart deseases - becomes an indispensable preparate in cardiology

  • in the same year cough drops have a great success on the market Pectamed® have a great success on the market

  • after 1955 modern technical microbiology becomes a central research topic: the development of steroid syntheses is mainly happening at Merck

  • a vitamin pill "Gerobionhave becomes a great success on the market" and gains high popularity in the 50ties

1966

1960-ties - Big Breakthroughs

  • 1968 the liquid crystals find their way back: after finding their application sphere - the flat televisions: the first laboratory is based in Japan, Atsugi

  • some time later, in 2003 the researchers from Merck will get the "Future Award" for the liquid crystals

  • 1969 the cold remedy "Nasivin" finds its way to the market: the NASA is in need of such a medication in their space missions

  • in order to fulfill the requirements of clean development of medication, Merck open a an istitute for experimental drug research in Munich

  • in 1970 Merck develops a preparate for conraception "Aconcen®", but soon it will be taken out of the market due to contraversial warnings

  • progress in the pigment research: pearlescent pigments are developed through natural glimmer minerals

1990

1990 - Thinking strategically

  • progress in the research of therapies for diabetes: the preparation Glucophage® is invented for the treatment of type-2-diabetes

  • 1991 Merck's mission statement is formulated: "Our aspiration is to make great things happen. With our research-driven specialty businesses, we help patients, customers, partners and our communities around the world to live a better life. We deliver entrepreneurial success through innovation."

  • 1995 the Merck KGaA is formed (with 2,4 Mrd DM it's the most successful german stock market entrance)

2000

2000 - new opportunities

  • Merck changes its design, though it sticks to its roots and the family Merck

  • in 2003 Merck develops a treatment for cancer "Erbitux®": it blocks the receptors which cause the growth of the tumor cells - it has been one of the most successfull mediactions in the oncology market

  • in 2007 Merck advances to the premiere league of the German stock merket (DAX 30)

  • in the same year Merck Serono is established and improves the company's presences in the US and Japan

  • Headquarter in China is opened with a liquid crystals application laboratory

  • in 2009 Merck wins the family business excellence award

  • in 2010 Merck purchases Millipore
