Saving Africa's Nature (SANA) is a non-governmental organization registered in 2008 to promote local communities' participation in conservation
Our mission is to restore the ecological balance of the Gongo forest which shelters the endangered Kikwati Wildlife Corridor by reducing the impact of human activitie
SANA works with the community and implements different projects through education, empowerment and conservation programs
We believe that knowledge and understanding help community members notice the value of nature and their responsibility to protect it.
We support communities with scholarship programs, school infrastructure development, and WASH initiatives, addressing the shortage of teachers, provision of learning materials and providing meals for children at school.
SANA believes in supporting communities to find alternative and sustainable ways of earning income as the best way to ensure their participation in Conservation.
SANA has established a centre for women empowerment which provides a platform for women to earn income sustainably through sewing and tie-dying, weaving (baskets, mats), permaculture etc.
Previously, SANA has worked with charcoal burners and empowered them with a chicken project. This provided a sustainable income generation activity which discourage their need to cut down trees for charcoal production.
SANA also works with communities to address several challenges such as shortage of water and has constructed a hospital to help improve access to medical support.
With the growth of the population of Tanzania (63,000,000, 2022 Census), human settlements are expanding exponentially and encroaching on the natural environment.
From 2002 to 2020, Tanzania lost 30.3kha of humid primary forest, making up 1.2% of its total tree cover loss in the same time period (Global forest watch).
This destruction disrupts some ecosystems due to deforestation and logging for agriculture, construction and charcoal businesses.
Massive deforestation is endanering wild life corridors which offer Natural vegetation-based habitat that facilitates the movement of wildlife species between two or more protected areas.
Despite being essential for maintaining the ecological integrity of protected areas, wildlife corridors in Tanzania experience pressure from development ventures and local communities activities.
Human Elephant Conflict
SANA is working with the Gongo village Community in developing strategies for the Conservation of the Gongo Community forest.
