Qutubuddin Aibak, a ruler of medieval India, was the first ruler of the Delhi Sultanate and also the founder of the Slave dynasty. He was a Turkish of the Aibak tribe and was the sultan for only four years, 1206-1210.
The word 'Mamluk' means 'slaves' in Arabic language. Since the Sultans of this dynasty were earlier slaves or were the sons of former slaves, the Mamluk dynasty came to be known as the slave dynasty.
Qutbuddin made “The Forty” (Group of nobles) developed at the court of the Slave Sultans. “The Forty” supported & helped the sultan to protect the dynasty but they also became powerful enough to decide who the next ruler would be!
