Emotional intelligence, a term coined by Salovey and Mayer (1990), is a name for skills which includes the capacity to manage emotions and relationships as well as an awareness of self and others. Daniel Goleman popularized their work in his best-selling book Emotional Intelligence.
There have been many tools developed to help managers measure their own and others' personal and interpersonal styles on the assumption that relationships are less puzzling and infuriating if people understand and appreciate their own and others' unique styles. The "Big 5" model of personality explains personality in terms of 5 major dimensions extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experiences.
