Who are The Attawapiskat First Nations People?

1.) The Attawapiskat peoples are located at the mouth of the Attawapiskat river in Kenora Ontario

2.)Fort Alberny established by the Hudson bay company in the 17th century introduced european colonialism and economy to the nation.

3.)The Attawapiskat are a sub group of the Cree identity known as Low land Cree or Swampy Cree

4.) Affected heavily by the legacy of colonialism (Residential schools, Poverty, high suicide rates etc.

Explanation of the themes and events

The Exploitation of The Attawapiskat Peoples

1.)The Numbered treaties were created to "legally" re purpose indigenous land for settlement and resource exploitation.

3.) This treaty is the source of much of the suffering of the Attawapiskat peoples it laid the groundwork for future colonial policies such as residential schools, isolated reserves systems.

Treaty 9

2.) The treaty 9 covered the Attawapiskat and other Cree nations located in northern Ontario.

4.) much of the rights guaranteed by the treaties were also subject to regulations and other caveats. The signing of the treaties were of much contention as it is believed that many of the indigenous groups were manipulated or did not understand the terms of the agreement.

About the Documentary

5.) The cost of living in Attawapiskat is high due to the remoteness of the sub arctic community, meant that many in the community could not afford to relocate.

1.)The documentary follows the crisis of 2012 when living conditions deteriorated to the point where the band government declared an emergency, sparking national debates.

3.) the community face rapidly dropping temperatures of -25°c meant that the winter would have been particularly dangerous.

Synopsis of the film

6.) The De Beers diamond mining conglomerate has a facility on Attawapiskat land, the agreement between the two parties is subject to contention as the wealth is reportedly not benefiting the community adding to the poverty.

4.) coupled with the flood in 2009 which displaced the population meant that many did not even have homes to live in.

2.) The Crisis involved a lack of running water, improper housing infrastructure, lack of insulation, homelessness and inadequate sewage systems

Personal Reflections

My Opinion

1.) Dealing with indigenous issues is a surprisingly difficult job especially if the communities are so far isolated from wider society. The canadian government allocated several million dollars for the reconstruction of the community following the 2012 crisis. but the crisis was simply followed by the 2016 crisis and so on.

2.) The issues faced by the Attawapiskat Seems to be a combination of things, their isolation leads to rising food prices as every commodity must be imported.

3.) They have to deal with the multi- generational trauma of residential schooling and colonial policies.

4.)legal issues surrounding land rights and accomodation brought about by the signing of treaty 9

5.) Resource exploitation by private companies is also rampant in the Attawapiskat Nation.
