Differences

Unconscious Bias, and its Importance!

Unconscious bias is a "Stereotype in judgment and/or behavior that results from subtle cognitive processes that often operate at a level below conscious awareness and without intentional control" (AAMC, 2018, para.2)

Influencing our unconscious bias:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Patient's feel respected
  • We, as clinical staff, should always be empathetic!!!

Case-Study:

Julie is 55-year-old Asian women that presents as a new patient to the Primary Care Physician’s office with uncontrolled hypertension. Patient predominantly speaks Japanese, but understands a little bit of English. The clinical staff is collecting Julie’s medical history and reason for visit in a loud voice; the patient also did not give eye contact while addressing her concerns to clinical staff. Patient then expressed that she feels uncomfortable and disrespected with the way clinical staff is speaking to her.
