The setting is in medieval times in the kingdom of Delain. The setting was portrayed by showing what everyday life was like and the different types of jobs people could have.
Peter is the protagonist, a courageous and kind prince who is next in line for the throne. He ends up being framed for the murder of his father and is put in jail.
Thomas is Peter's younger brother. Always stuck in his brother's shadow, he is often jealous of Peter and works to stand out to their father. He ends up as the King of Delain after Peter is put in jail.
Before being poisoned to death, Roland the Good was the King of Delain, renowned for slaying Niner the Dragon. He was married to Queen Sasha(deceased) and had two sons, Peter and Thomas
Flagg the magician is the Royal Adviser to King Roland(Later King Thomas). He has been around for centuries and is a frightening presence in the castle. His ultimate goal is to overthrow Delain's monarchy and to plunge the kingdom into "a thousand years of bloody anarchy, give or take a few months".
This fantasy tale is the story of two brothers and how the murder of their father changed their lives forever. Flagg, a dark wizard and the king's adviser, is trying to destroy the Kingdom of Delain. Seeing that Prince Peter (who is in line for the throne) might get in his way, he works up a plan to frame Peter for his father's death.
His plan succeeds and as a result, Peter is locked up in a tower in the center of the city and Thomas, Peter's younger brother, is crowned King at only twelve years old. Due to his youth and his inexperience, Thomas allows Flagg enormous amounts of power.
Flagg thinks he has gotten away with his crime but one thing he doesn't know is that Thomas was watching the night his father was killed and is aware of what actually happened.
Internal- Thomas is unsure whether or not he should speak up about what he saw the night the king was murdered.
External- Peter must escape from prison and stop Flagg from destroying the kingdom.
Solution- Thomas reveals what happened to his butler when he starts talking in his sleep and sleep-walks to the scene of the crime. His Butler then talks to a judge about what he saw and the truth comes out.
Solution- Using the sewing wheel in his old dollhouse, Peter was able to make a rope out of the napkins given to him with his meals everyday to get out of the tower. With the help of some friends, he was able to jump from his rope to the ground and goes to find a way to kill Flagg.
Tone continued
“People’s minds, particularly the minds of children, are like wells—deep wells full of sweet water. And sometimes, when a particular thought is too unpleasant to bear, the person who has that thought will lock it into a heavy box and throw it into that well. He listens for the splash . . . and then the box is gone. Except it is not, of course. Not really.”
― Stephen King, The Eyes of the Dragon
The author's tone is mysterious prompts you to think deeper. It is demonstrated by this quote because while it talks about our inner thoughts and actions it says "He listens for the splash . . . and then the box is gone. Except it is not, of course. Not really.”, which gets us to think about the character the author is talking about and if their actions really speak to the truth. The author writes in a way that makes you question what will happen next.
“I think that real friendship always makes us feel such sweet gratitude, because the world almost always seems like a very hard desert, and the flowers that grow there seem to grow against such high odds.”
― Stephen King, The Eyes of the Dragon
This quote works with the friendships found in this story and how they affect the total outcome. Because Peter had great friends and people he could trust in his life he was able to make it to freedom and escape the tower. They helped pull him out of a hard time and kept him hopeful for the future.
Out of the many themes in this book one that I felt summarizes the story well is never giving up. I choose this theme because it was an important part of the story where characters choose to push through their struggles and prevail despite all the obstacles and dangers in their way.
Whether it was Flagg carrying out his evil plan, Peter desperately trying to escape the tower, or Peter's friends working to save him and the kingdom, they all kept on fighting for what they wanted, going with the theme of Never Giving Up.
This novel made me feel excited and I was eager to find out what happened next while reading. Although certain parts of it were dull, overall the story was full of mystery and was intriguing. The characters had good development and were very likeable as well.
A connection I could make to the story was of feeling jealous of an older sibling as sometimes I can get jealous of my older sister. My jealousy is not as extreme as Thomas's but I can relate to what he was feeling.
The larger message that I took from this novel is that you get served what you deserve. When the book finished, all bad deeds made by the characters got thrown back at them and everyone got an ending that fit with the actions they took earlier on. It really gave you a sense of karma.
