The Genetic Mutations of the Chocolate Labrador?

This is a picture from 2011 with me and my old dog Dougal.

What is my mutation

What is my mutation?

My mutation will be that the dog will be able to clime on walls like spiders or other bugs. It will be able to do this because of the there legs and the special genetic qualities of them.

As you can see spiders have small hairs on the bottom of their legs to help them tick to walls

In the bottom left marked by the blue square is the only homozygous recessive trait we see. This is the animal affected by the mutation.

Which genes were mutated?

Genes Mutated

The gene I am mutating is the gene that effects their paw structure and how it functions. The paw will now have spider like abilities to walk on walls and ceilings. As spiders do have 6 legs the dog will only have 4 legs. The reason why spiders can walk on walls is because they have thousands of tiny hairs which make contact points on the wall. Looking back to a dog, the dog will have millions of hairs per paw to make up for the weight difference between the dog and the spider.

How are these qualities inherited?

The "dog of the future", will have these to improve their hunting skills. The dogs developed these spider like qualities over time due to their "training" or "practice" of climbing up trees and steep hills.

These qualities allowed dogs who could see long distances because they were in trees or higher up to spot prey or escape being hunted.

This is a recessive trait. It is rare within dogs in the future but still happens a fair amount, especially in larger hunting dogs and in smaller faster dogs who want to escape prey.

Hip Dysplasia

Hip dyspalsia happens when dogs are bred with other dogs within their family. Hip Dysplasia affects the hips of the dogs and makes it very sore. The ball and socket in the hip joint do not fit properly causing extra friction which makes a painful feeling and wears away at the joint. My dog, Dougal (see the picture) who passed away about 8 years ago had Hip Dysplasia and the obvious symptoms I could see was that he could not jump very well and he would get tired very easily especially in his older years. It would be painful for him to walk.

  • The trait of the dogs fur being the chocolatey color is recessive for the 2nd trait (b) in the dyhybrid cross making it heterozygous cross
  • Chocolate labs live an average of 10% shorter life than Yellow and black labs due to genetics
  • The Genetic makeup of a chocolate lab fur colour is Eebb and EEbb
