What is Standards Based Grading? (SBG)

Standards based grading is an innovative method of grading that focuses on learning and increased achievement. This tool to measure academic growth and progress breaks class content into learning targets that makes education more accessible to all students! Through standards based grading teachers are able to track student progress, provide appropriate feedback & adapt instruction to meet the needs of the student.

What is the purpose of SBG?

  • To implement a feedback model based on agreed-upon levels of understanding and rubrics.
  • To assess students based on standards, not compliance.
  • To provide purposeful feedback based on evidence of learning goals.
  • To facilitate purposeful learning experiences that are not limited by the assessment platform.
  • To empower students to know what they can do and where they need to go next.
  • To allow students to demonstrate mastery or progress based on the most recent performance on a clearly defined set of expectations/criteria.

Why do we believe in SBG?

Why do we believe in Standards Based Grading?

  • We believe students and parents should always know where they (students) stand.
  • We believe student achievement levels provide an understanding for teachers, parents, and students regarding what a student is able to understand, explain, and apply.
  • We believe grading should promote a growth mindset.
  • We believe student grading provides relevant feedback as it relates to skills, strengths, and weaknesses.

How do we make standards accessible?

How do the teachers make standards based learning accessible for my student?

Standards-Based Teaching & Learning is standard practice at Innovation Academy and a part of our culture. Components include:

  • unit maps aligned to standards
  • student self-tracking systems
  • proficiency scales and rubrics
  • self-directed learning at individual paces
  • pre-assessments used to determine current knowledge
  • post-assessments used to progress through standards at each student's individual pace
  • multiple attempts for students to reach mastery on standards
  • various choices for how students show their mastery

SBL in Action

After re-assessing and showing mastery of a standard, a student moves his marker to show his progress and pace.

A student's perspective on SBG

Grading for Standards Based Learning

How is student success measured using Standards Based Grading?

Student success is measured using a tiered scale based on demonstration of mastery. Through a set arrangement of standards-aligned activities (projects, hands-on activities, quizzes, journals, etc.), students provide evidence of their learning based on a scale of 1-4.

SBG Across the Curriculum

How do the Pioneers at Innovation Academy address standards based learning across the curriculum?

Standards based grading allows for the seamless transition between content areas to facilitate personalized learning experiences for students.
