BECOMING HOMELESS

There are extensive sterotypes and stigmas around the world often dismissing homeless individuals as addicts and alcoholics. An answer has been discoverered through research that says addiction can be a cause as well as a result of homelessness.

Homeless due to Addiction

Individuals with addiction can suffer from becoming homeless as a result of occupational impairment, inability to perform well at a job, and chronic unemployment which leads to difficulty affording housing.

Addiction due to homelessness

Upon the individual becoming homeless the fear, despair, deprivation along with shame and guilt encourages use of drugs and/or alcohol to manage these feelings which leads them to remain the position of homelessness.

Homeless &Mental illness's

  • Schizophrenia – Leads to episodes of paranoia, disorganized thinking, delusional beliefs, and hallucinations
  • Mood Disorders – Such as Major Depression and Bipolar affect the individuals state of mind, energy levels, and emotions.
  • Personality Disorders – Such as Borderline PD and Obsessive-Compulsive PD interfere with an individuals normal social functions. Causing increased hostility, avoidance of relationships, etc.
  • Anxiety Disorders – Social Anxiety Disorder, Post-traumatic stress disorder can cause characteristics of persistent fear and worry.

Substance Abuse among Homeless

  • A lot of homeless people depend on drugs/alcohol to cope with their situation of being homeless.
  • Substance Abuse plays a significant role in homelessness due to it causing occupational impairment, inability to perform tasks on the job.
  • Estimated at about 38% of homeless suffer from Alcohol abuse, while 26% suffer from Drug abuse.
  • While alcohol abuse is more commonly found within the Older aged, the drug abuse is commonly found amongst the younger aged homeless.

Treatment for Substance Abuse

Substance abuse treatment was developed with the intent to assist individuals addicted to drugs and alcohol reduce and/or stop their drug seeking and usage. Treatment may occur in a variety of settings, take different forms, and last for short or long lengths of time.

Therapy in Treatment

  • Individual Therapy: Is a process in which a patient works one on one with a trained counselor to explore their feelings, beliefs, and/or behaviors, and identifying aspects of their lives in which they would like to change.
  • Group Therapy: Takes place with a group of people together rahter than working one on one in a session. During group therapy members might introduce themselves followed by sharing ther expereince and progress.
