What is this conspiracy theory?

How does this connect to cancer?

Why is it believable?

1

It is illogical to assume the pharmaceutical industry will hide something that big.

Why is it not believable?

Because the cure for cancer is something that people are constantly working towards, would it not be a bad move to hide it if you've created it? The cure for cancer would be in very high demand, and would rake in large amounts of money because of how unpredictable cancer can be. Aside from the money, it would be difficult to cover something so big. Someone would be bound to slip up eventually, and since this conspiracy theory has existed for so long without any pharmacists, scientists, or doctors providing proof that they had the cure to cancer, then maybe the cure for cancer never existed in the first place.

This conspiracy theory, which cannot be traced back to a certan person or time period, is mainly centred around an organisation believers refer to as 'Big Pharma'. Big Pharma refers to a specific part of the pharmaceutical industry which is said to be run by people in positions of power (usually politicians, physicists, and corporations) in order to hide certain medical information from the general public.

This conspiracy theory, which has most likely been around for much longer than I have, has become more popular due to recent events (like COVID-19). Believers have spread the idea that Big Pharma not only created COVID-19, but have the cure on-hand as well and are saving it for the richest 1% of the world.

The Big Pharma conspiracy theory is often believed by people who are a part of large communities where ideas and thoeries spread quickly (such as a church group, small town, or close-knit place of work). This may lead to people being easily influenced, especially if the believer is in a somewhat high position. This can be common amongst groups that already believe in things like the earth being flat. The Big Pharma conspiracy theory, while being its own seperate theory, often has connections to other conspiracy theories that make it easier to believe (ex. vaccines cause autism).

Another reason why people may easily believe this conspiracy theory is because of recent events such as covid, elections, etc. Some people may just need something to latch on to as they are having a hard time believing that things are really going the way they are, so they believe in the things the people around them are talking about, even if they know its wrong. Sometimes, people just need something to hold on to in hard times.

Because the Big Pharma Conspiracy is mostly about medicine, it has been extended to Big Pharma 'hiding the cure for cancer' so that they can get money from cancer patients trying their 'cures' that don't work. According to many conspiracy theorists, Big Pharma saves the cure for their rich and important patients (Politicians, Millionares, CEOs, etc.) to further bring in the money.

Over the years, the 'Big Pharma' conspiracy theory has become more popular. While most people would only believe in the cancer theory, many people have still caused a big enough fuss to cause multiple pharmacies and hospitals to publish articles explaining why they would never hide the cure for cancer.

Some believers only use the 'Big Pharma' and 'Cancer' theories to push people to go the 'natural' way, by using things like natural remedies and essential oils. While yes, some of these remedies may aid in helping the person feel a little bit better, it will not cure their illness. Many people believe that pharmacies and Hospitals are trying to make people sick on purpose so they can get paid; which leads many believers to go the natural way.

Although the Big Pharma conspiracy thoery is relatively popular, it is still not believable once given enough thought due to three main reasons:

The 'Natural Way' is just as bad.

2

Many believers praise the 'Natural way', encouraging people to use spices, herbs, plants, and essentails oils to fix their problems. Not only is the 'Natural way' full of misinformation, but nature can poison us too. Many people can hurt themselves trying to make their own medicine rather than buying something made by professionals.

3

It is unlikely that a single cure to cancer can exist.

Cancer is not just one singular disease. It is an umbrella term for over 200 types of cancer, with all of them having different weaknesses and causes. A 'cure' that works on one type of cancer, may not work on another.

However, cancer is no longer as dangerous as it used to be since the progression of medicine. While a cure to cancer does not exist, there are several treatments available. Take chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy, for example. Chemotherapy includes special medicine that shrinks cancer cells. Surgery can remove cancerous tissue, and radiation therapy kills off cancerous cells.

A cure for cancer may never exist, but the various treatments available can at least help people to have a chance of survival.

Is the Government Hiding the Cure to Cancer?

What do I think?

Does Social Media come into play?

I personally believe that this conspiracy theory is not true.

While yes, the government and many pharmaceutical industries may not be entirely good, cancer is a very serious issue and a 'cure' for cancer is constantlt being researched. I personally believe that, while some natural remidies may aid in making people feel better, medicine has been purposefully designed to combat any problems regarding illness. We have negineered a way to fix things. It's completely fine if someone doesn't trust drugstore products, but to spread misinformation and harm people because of their own miseducation? I find that to be absolutely disgusting.

Yes, some government-owned industries should not be trusted, but the medicine has always and will always continue to be full of people who just want to help. To mistrust all doctors, pharmacists, and scientists is a huge mistake. Going the 'Natural way' while being uneducated is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever heard. Unless you know what you are doing, you risk seriously hurting yourself or someone else when you use only plants, herbs, and essential oils to cure any illness. You risk poisoning yourself, and possibly family and friends, if you are not 100% sure of what you are doing.

The pharmaceutical industry is here to help. And while some pharmacists may not be good people, that does not speak for the rest of them. Most scientists, doctors, and scientists know what they are doing and are actively trying to help people.

In recent years, social media has become more and more popular, becoming a part of everyday life. This makes it easier for opinions and misinformation to spread.

In social media apps like Tik Tok, Instagram, and Twitter it is not hard to find people who oppose the government. Many people (including the younger generations) are skeptical of the government, and this can lead them to believe in conspiracies such as Big Pharma.

Ideas spread very quickly on social media, and some people have taken advantage of it. Social media uses an algorithim, which will cater to what people want to see. This means that if someone interacts enough with a conspiracy theory, it will become all they see.
