Injury of Musculocutaneous Nerve

MUSCULOCUTANEOUS

NERVE

SIGNS OF INJURY

Terminal branch of lateral cord of brachial plexues,

receiving fibers from C5-C7

ORIGIN

1) Exits axilla by piercing coracobrachialis

(motor nerve)

2) Descends between biceps brachii and brachialis (motor nerve)

3) Continues as lateral cutaneous nerve of forearm (sensory nerve)

COURSE

&

INNERVATED STRUCTURES

  • Weakness of elbow flexion and forearm supination.

  • Sensory loss over the lateral and volar aspect of the forearm.

  • Weak or absent biceps tendon reflex.

  • Damage to the shoulder and brachial plexus

  • Compression of the nerve by the biceps aponeurosis and tendon against the fascia of the brachialis muscle

RISK FACTORS

A musculocutaneous nerve injury results in:

  • Paralysis of arm flexor muscles;
  • Weak flexion of glenohumeral joint
