What is mental health?

  • Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
  • It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.
  • Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including:

  • Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry
  • Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse
  • Family history of mental health problems

Why is mental health important?

Why is mental health important?

Mental health is important because....

  • It’s a vital part of your life and impacts your thoughts, behaviors and emotions.
  • Being healthy emotionally can promote productivity and effectiveness in activities like work or school.
  • It plays an important part in the health of your relationships, and allows you to adapt to changes in your life.

Impact of social media on mental health

Impact of social media on mental health

  • Focusing on likes: The need to gain “likes” on social media can cause teens to make choices they would not make, including altering their appearance, engaging in negative behaviors, and accepting risky social media challenges.
  • Cyberbullying: Teens girls in particular are at risk of cyberbullying through use of social media. Cyberbullying is associated with depression, anxiety, and a risk of suicidal thoughts.
  • Making comparisons with other people known as "influencers".
  • Having too many fake friends: Even with privacy settings, teens can collect thousands of friends through friends of friends on social media. The more people on the friend list, the more people have access to screenshot photos, Snaps, and updates and use them for other purposes. There is no privacy on social media.
  • Less face time: Teens especially spend most of their time on social media which may limit the time they actually spend interacting with others in the real world or outside activities etc...

Definition of body image

  • Body image is the way you feel when you look in the mirror or how you feel about your body.
  • A person can have a positive body image, when they feel good about themselves, or a negative body image, when they feel less positive about the way they look or feel.
  • Body image is closely linked to our self-esteem and how we feel about ourselves.

Definition of body image

What are the effects of body image?

  • It can range from low self-esteem, which can lead to negative moods and mood swings. Young people who are feeling down are more likely to focus on the negative messages around them and make negative comparisons between their bodies and what they see as 'ideal' bodies.

What are the effects of body image?

How to deal with body image

1. Practise self acceptance.

2. Stop comparing yourself to others.

3. Get rid of people, places and things that are holding you back from having a positive body image.

4. Dress for yourself, not others.

5. Talk to someone about it, particularly someone you know who can make you feel good about yourself.

How to deal with body image

Why should we care about body image?

Why should we care about body image?

  • We should care about body image because our body influences our mental health, our physical health, how we take care of ourselves, and how we relate to others. Those with a negative body image have a higher chance of developing an eating disorder and will often suffer from depression, low self-esteem, and obsessions with weight loss.

Why is body image a problem?

  • Body image is a problem because in today's society people promote unrealistic body ideals, it is challenging to not get caught up in comparing yourself to these unrealistic standards. As a result, many individuals may experience depression, anxiety, and anger. In addition to affecting an individual’s view of their self, poor body image may also result in avoidance of social situations and may interfere with developing healthy social and romantic relationships.
