The Social security Act of 1935, signed into law by Franklin D. Roosevelt was created to give retired workers benefits; however not all members of the American workforce benefited from it.

Who was involved in the Social Security Act of 1935

-Francis E. Townsend and Franklin D. Rossevelt.

-Francis created a townsend group to promote the SSA.

-Franklin created a comittee to discuss and make decisions on the matter.

What specific benefits were outlined in the act.

  • Relief for Great Depression Victims.

  • A national old-age insurance program for the elderly.

  • A system of nationally uniform State unemployment programs for those without jobs.

Who was denied bentifits under the Social Security Act of 1935 (SSA) and why?

  • They discluded these people because of racial reasons.
  • During the time of the SSA this act excluded the most needy people from the group.

  • This act also excluded the lower class ones as well.
  • Because blacks are considered as agricultural laborers and domestic workers they did not recieve the welfare system.
  • The congress was all rich Democrats who were determined to block out any blacks that wanted this Social Security.
