Population

  • The population was slowly but surely on the rise
  • When people found out what the population of Newfoundland was they started calculating how much it grew every year
  • During this time the population was on the rise every year it started growing more and more.

Location & Size

  • Located off the east coast of Canada in the Atlantic Ocean
  • Newfoundland is the island (112,790km2)
  • Labrador is on the mainland (292,930km2)
  • The Capital is St. John's, Newfoundland

Use to a Union

Newfoundland would both bring resources to the union, but it would benefit from support as well.

Use to a Union/ Why Join Confederation?

Money

  • Big reason to join Canada was money
  • Newfoundland was almost broke
  • Federal Government would give money to support
  • They would also help pay debts and bills

Protection

In the scenario of attack or conflict, Newfoundland could count on Canada for help and protection. They had much more military and weapons, and would protect their country with them.

Resources

Newfoundland would bring multiple resources to the table. Some of them were:

  • Gold
  • Iron
  • Copper
  • and Many, Many, More!

First Nations

  • Before Newfoundland was "discovered", the First Nations were there
  • There were three main groups:

1) The Inuit and the Innu

2) The Mi'kmaq

3) The Southern Inuit

Joey Smallwood

  • Joey Smallwood was the leader of the pro-confederation group
  • When Newfoundland joined, he was elected Premier (Liberal)
  • Won vote by 52%

  • The date that Newfoundland officially joined Confederation
  • Ceremonies occurred the following day
