What is an Ecosystem?

An ecosystem is an area of biotic and abiotic factors working together to maintain healthy plant life, control population, and create a good environment for some recreational purposes. There are lots of different abiotic and biotic factors that vary in each ecosystem. Abiotic basically means that something is not alive and to be biotic is the opposite, to be alive There are also lots of different recreational purposes. Different ecosystem types include coastal wetland, plains, forests, and wetlands. This ties into the terrariums because a terrarium is a mini ecosystem and a mini water cycle, with lots of biotic and abiotic factors witch build up the tiny ecosystem ecosystem.

Levels of organization of living things from smallest to largest:

Atom

Molecule

Cell

Tissue

Organ

Organ System

Organism - An individual animal, plant, or single celled life form. The sphagnum moss in my terrarium is an example of an organism.

Population- a population is the amount of individuals that make up the whole entire species. An example relating to my terrarium would be there is a population of organisms in the dirt.

Community-a community is a group of organisms that live in one environment. This is sort of an exact example of how a terrarium works this includes all the fungi, the springtails, the plants and everything.

Ecosystem- and ecosystem is a group of interacting organisms that keep an ecosystems populations under control, and help keep plant life organized. This terrarium has the soil the plants fungi and animals, therefore an ecosystem.

What are Ecosystem Serviases?

An ecosystem service is something that an ecosystem can provide for humans such as drinking water, extra curriculars, wood, and lots more. These services help people directly and indirectly weather its fresh air to help with depression or something simple like snow that you may enjoy. These different ecosystem services make it so humans can function all around the world. ecosystem services are important to humans because nature is where all of our everything comes from. Ecosystems are were we get water food and everything. Our ecosystem services in the terrarium include filtering water and creating carbon dioxide.

What is a Watershed?

A watershed is an area where stormwater run off funnels into one area such as an ocean, lake, or river. Our watershed is called the los penasquitos, but our sub-watershed is called Smiley Lagoon. Our water is ‘impaired’, meaning it is not used for certain things such as not being good for aquatic life and human drinking. Although our water is impaired it is dynamic, which means it can change at any time. our terrariums tie in to this because a watershed is part of the water cycle and our terrariums our mini water cycles it honestly models a whole ecosystem that includes all abiotic and biotic factors.

Local Wetland Isues

coastal

wetlands

Wetlands are an area where water covers soil, this amount of water changes throughout the seasons due to rain and snow fall and drought. Wetlands are also really good at filtering out pollutants. Some services of the wetlands include fresh water, habitat, and recreational such as hiking. Wetlands also home lots of different species and to them, the definition of wetlands is home, pollutants destroy that home that they work so hard to maintain.

Wetlands provide many ecosystem services. Some ecosystem services that wetlands provide are fresh water, habitat, and recreational such as hiking. I think the most important one is habitat because to many animals the wetlands is the only place they can live and if wetland amounts decreased lots of animals would would die because of there specific needs. This ties into the terrariums because the organisms in the soil need soil, a specific environment

Ecosysystem Servases of Wetland

Our local wetlands are a delicate ecosystem. Unfortunately, they are being negatively impacted by many things. One example is litter. Which is commonly plastic because other stuff such as food matter decomposes. Oils are also very negatively impactful because when cars let out oil it gets into our water cycle, and oil is very bad for people therefore cannot be utilised by humans. Another thing is dirt. This can cause the water to be full of particles and make it even more impaired. Especially when it has time to pick up dirt from down the mountain. Warming climate is another thing that is infecting our wetland by making the environment not very suitable for sea animal and aquatic plant life. Invasive species are also harming our wetlands. A wetland is an ecosystem, and ecosystems have to be balanced and when a new species comes if its not in an animal's diet, it consumes the whole thing. Stormwater run off in a wetland is bad because all of the pollutants off of the hill/mountain get tired off and pulled down to the wetland. These pollutants include oils, dirt, animal poop, and any litter around there. If there was storm water runoff in the terrariums it would be negatively impacting the springtails, the mosses and all of the biotic factors because when the pollutants sink into the soil that's bad for the roots of the plants and especially the springtails

Desighned Solutions

Because we have changed the natural land to build our cities, stormwater runoff is a major issue to our local wetlands. To help our local wetlands, we have created ways to mitigate the negative impacts. Some ways we are helping is using retention and detention ponds, you could use sewers with filtration systems, another solution is transporting it to a treatment plant then to a river. These retention ponds retain the water for very long periods of time. Detention ponds only temporarily hold excess water. Another thing is a rain garden. A rain garden is an area were rain seeps through the soil and goes through layers of things such as gravel and rocks. This helps lessen the amount of water flowing into our wetlands. I also think a green roof, a roof with deep soil and plants, is a great solution because it is a permeable surface, which means water can seep through, so there is less run off and more space for nature to be nature. I think the most impactful solution to stormwater runoff would be a detention pond because after pollutants settle the water is decently clean, perfect for the wetland. If my terrarium was the end of Smiley creek Lagoon watershed i would protect from it urban runoff by building a small detention pond to let the pollutants sink to the ground before entering the ecosystem to make it so that the oils couldn't get into the mosses and i would make sure to seal it.

all about helping our wetlands

Detention and retention ponds are both designed solution to stormwater runoff. Here is information about each type of pond:

Detention pond:

There is not always water in the detention ponds

Detention ponds allow some polutiots to get through to the wetlands and watersheds

Helps prevent flooding

Not designed to be pleasing to the eye, more a big hole minus storms

Main Purpose: to hold excess rainwater and stormwater runoff

Retention pond:

It always has water in it

Filters water very wall, evan gray water and black water grey water is sower and sink water and black water is human waist these pollutants sink to the floor of the pond.

A retention pond can go along time without maintenance, but costs a lot to fix.

Is designed to be pleasing to the eye always, as you would assume, it also acts as decor

These retention ponds only hold a little water compared to some detention ponds.

Main Purpose: a retention pond is designed to have extra capacity for rainwater as it falls and to slow runoff

My terrarium models a few of the services a retention pond provides. The services are filtering water, being pleasing to the eye, filters all water, and last but not least, filtering air.

water filtertian to improve water quality

Water quality parameters are measurements that measure water quality, which are things such as PH, ammonia, nitrite, temperature, turbidity, and phosphate. These measurements are important because they help us know how healthy the sea water is, the groundwater is, how drinkable the water is and much more. Water filtration is an important ecological service of wetlands because when the wetland naturally filters the water the animals are able to live in it because things like oils would potentially clog their gills, so it makes the water more livable for aquatic animals and plants. It also makes it so some nature made and people made (spaphicly people made) pollutants don't infect our drinking water. The filtration process is taking place because of the different layers of soil, charcoal, gravel , and lava rock. These different layers impact things such as PH, phosphate, Nitrite, Ammonia, and turbidity. The charcoal ,specifically activated charcoal because that's what we used, has this rigidness to it, capturing bacterias. Gravel also helps to remove lots of other stuff too like microplastics. And last but not least the lava rock captures water inside for helping good bacteria grow and thrive.
