Balanced Contrast

Remember, we want balanced contrast, just as we wan balanced exposure.

However, sometimes high contrast can be expressive. Low contrast just stinks!

To get a balanced exposure...

You have to start with a balanced exposure. Make sure you aren't using flourescent lights/hall lighting!

A cloudy day or shade gives the best results. Direct light will give you higher contrast...

Using Actions

ACTIONS TUTORIAL

STARTING

Open Photoshop

Open your image file by hitting "file" and "open"

You should find your image file in the downloads (if not, download your image from Photoshop)

OPEN

Actions

Click "window" then "actions" and the actions will pop up on the right side of Photoshop.

The actions you are looking for are Audrey BW, Full of Soul BW, Gossamer BW, Lavish BW (Under PTM Luminosity). It looks like a bump - I call it the "BW Bump."

Select the Action

and then hit the "play" button at the bottom (looks like a triangle on it's side)

Click here and select "new action"

MAKING YOUR OWN ACTIONS

First, highlight "default actions"

Then hit the icon with four horizontal lines, and select "new action." Name it YOUR NAME BW.

Then hit "record."

Select the settings

1. 1.1. Click "Image" then "Adjustments" then "Black and White."

Adjust your contrast

Click "Image" then "Adjustments" then "Brightness/Contrast."

I like to add contrast to my images.

See how it LOOKS on your image.

Adjust

Click "stop"

Now your action is ready to use!

If you want to batch process, add a save and close before stopping your recording. Then you can batch process a group of photos all at once.

SAVING

Proper Saving is important!

To save:

Click on "Layers" and then "Flatten Layers."

Click "File" then "Save as" and then choose JPG and 12 quality (maximum).

Save on the desktop so you can find it easier.

When you save your image add a BW to the end of the file name (but BEFORE it says .jpg).

Your file name should look like:

"DSC_001BW.JPG
