What is a volcano?

Different types of volcanoes

There are three different types of volcano:

- Composit volcanoes are hills or mountains with a conical shape, such Mount Etna in Sicily and Mount Fuji in Japan.

-Shield volcanoes have low slopes, like Mauna Loa.

-Super volcanoes are enormous, and appear as a depression, like Yellowstone.

Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24 m, UNESCO recognizes 25 sites of cultural interest with the Mount Fuji locality.

Mt. Fuji is a composite volcano and an explosive eruption created the crater and a vast volcanic plane to the eastern side of the mountain. Mount Fuji has got a regular form because of the various eruptions that happened. It last eruption was in 1708.

The people in Japan don’t think Fuji is dangerous because they divinise it , and if you don’t annoy a divinity, it doesn’t do disasters.

For this reason when Fuji erupts many people associate this phenomenon with their mistakes.

Obviously this story is also used to increase tourism and fascinate visitors.

In fact, Mount Fuji is one of the major attractions of the country, both for revenue and for visitors.

ETYMOLOGY

Mount Fuji is the highest volcano in Japan. The mountain as it appears now is the "New Fuji volcano", which began to erupt about 10,000 years ago. Under the "New Fuji volcano" lies the "Old Fuji volcano", which was active between 100,000 years ago and the "Komitake volcano", which began active 700,000 years ago.

ERUPTIONS IN HISTORY

The peak of Komitake was about 2,300 metres above sea level. After an enormous eruption 50,000 years ago it created a new volcano known as Old fuji.

Komitake

Old Fuji was 3,100 metres above sea level. It created many explosive eruptions that threw out a lot of lava. After 5,000 years of inactivity a big explosion of Old Fuji created New Fuji volcano.

Old Fuji

Today it is 3.776 metres above sea level. Now it isn’t active very much but the most famous eruptions of mount Fuji are in 781, 1083 and 1707. This eruptions created a lot of problem to Osaka city many times.
