Excuses

Last Week...

Excuses

We talked about excuses. They are real, but they keep us from getting better at something we would like to be better at.

Think

Last week we shared about excuses we make for things we aren't good at...

We are going to watch 2 videos today... Make a T-Chart on the paper in front of you.

Video 1

T-Chart/Videos

Make some notes on the Video 1 side of your T-Chart. What characteristics does this young man have?

Lesson

if you hear things long enough, you start to believe it and you might stop trying.

“you’re stupid”, or “you’re worthless”, or “you will never be good at anything, or your parents say “I was never good at math so you won’t be good at math”, or they say “I was not an athlete so you won’t be an athlete”, or they tell you that you only understand things in black and white.

Discuss

Now... I want you to think of a time you were told something or you heard something like what I just said... how did you feel? How did they feel? How did it affect you? How did it affect them?

we have talked about a boy who had half an arm and still played baseball. He made no excuses. We also talked about a boy who made excuses for EVERYTHING having to do with his grades/school.

GMS

GROWTH MINDSET!

Last week I asked you to write down whether you thought you were born smart, average, or dumb... and why. Then we read "You Can Grow Your Intelligence".

10/11/19

In order to grow your intelligence or talent, you must have a growth mindset

Why we need a GM

What is the Difference?

There are TWO different types of mindsets..

1. Growth Mindset

2. Fixed Mindset

What do you think the difference is?

FM

Fixed Mindset

--It will make you believe that if you were born smart, you will always be smart. If you were born dumb, you will always be dumb. If you were born average, you will also be average.

GM

Growth Mindset

**Opposite of Fixed Mindset

If you try hard enough, your intelligence can grow and develop

When we first talked about excuses, we discussed having really good excuses, but that we shouldn't use them even if we have them...

10/25/19

After excuses, we discussed if you were born Smart, Average, or Dumb... We read the article showing us that our brain can grow if we use it.

Growth VS Fixed Mindsets

Dumb? AVG?

SMart?

A fixed mindset is when you believe you were born with fixed traits- you can't change them.

A Growth mindset is when you believe you can grow and get better if you try

Fixed or Growth?

Today we are discussing the first step to having a growth mindset... That step is Risk-Taking.

What is Risk-Taking?

DISCUSS.

RISK-Taking!

Pay attention to how people judge her before she even starts...

Risks

She took a Big Risk!!

She knew people would judge her on her looks, yet she still went for it!

Susan

Because of the risk Susan took, she got the chance to live her dream... she took 2nd place that year... became a recording artist... and now makes a lot of money.

November 8, 2019

We have been talking about Growth Mindset. With a growth mindset, you believe that you can get better at anything if you try hard enough.

11/8/19

A few weeks ago we talked about Risk-Taking being the first step to a growth mindset. We watched a video on Susan Boyle. She took a BIG risk going on Britain's Got Talent. She knew people would make fun of her looks, but she didn't use that as an excuse. She went on the show and did her best and ended up doing very well.

Risk Taking

Writing Activity

You need a piece of paper and something to write with...

Risk- Taking Assessment

After each question, you will do a think(write)/pair(share your answers with a partner)/share (share out with the class). There are 5 questions.

Q1

What risks are you uncomfortable taking in the classroom?

Q2

What makes you feel stupid, nervous, or embarrassed in the classroom?

Q3

What do you do when you make a mistake in the classroom?

What support do you need in order to take a risk in the classroom?

Q4

Q5

What can you do to help your classmates take risks in the classroom?

Wrap Up

If we treat one another with respect, we will be more willing to take risks. More importantly, we shouldn't worry about what others think when we make a mistake.

End

We learn from our mistakes. If there is something you want to get better at, keep taking risks and you will get better.

#bebettereverday

November 14, 2019

We have discussed excuses, fixed and growth mindsets, and risk taking. Has anyone taken a risk in class lately, that they would not normally take?

11/14/19

Today we are discussing effort.

effort

Risk taking and effort go hand-in-hand. It is hard to keep taking risks when you fail and you probably have people laughing at you... That is where effort comes in. You keep trying and keep getting better.

Effort Cont'd

Activity

Please get out a piece of paper/your notebooks and answer the question:

What does effort mean to you?

Be read to discuss.

Effort just means doing your best.

sometimes your best is not as good as you did the day before, but it is your best today. That is okay.

Effort Is...

GRIT!
