How To Use Your Glucometer

What are my blood glucose targets?

Monitoring your blood glucose levels

You will need to check your blood glucose levels 3 times a day

1: Fasting/before-breakfast < 5.0mmol/L

2: 1 hr after breakfast <7.0 mmol/L

3: 1 hr after main meal <7.0mmol/L

What do we watch for in mum?

  • Pre-eclampsia
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Excess fluid around baby
  • Fetal movements
  • Medications

What do we watch for in baby?

Baby

  • Macrosomia (weight over 4.5kg or 9.9lbs)

  • Low blood glucose after delivery

  • Jaundice (yellow colour in skin)

  • Respiratory (breathing) distress after delivery

Breastfeeding can help to reduce childhood obesity as well as having nutritional and immunological benefits.

It also reduces your chance of Type 2 diabetes after pregnancy.

Harvesting colostrum from 37/40 can lower chances of your baby having a low blood sugar after delivery
