1865

  • On Jan. 31st, 1865 Congress approves the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

  • On Feb. 3rd, 1865 Peace conference happened with President Lincoln meets with Vice President Alexander Stephens, but in conclusion the meeting failed and the war will continue

  • On March 25th, 1865 General Lee's Army began an attack on General Grant's forces at Petersburg, Virginia

  • On April 9th, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrenders his army to General Ulysses S. Grant

  • On April 14th, 1865 Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth

  • In 1865 the Chinese were hired to work on the Transcontinental Railroad
  • In 1865 A rebellion in Jamaica started an investigation in England

  • On Feb. 19th 1866 the Freedmen's Bureau is passed by Congress

  • On Apr. 9th, 1866 President Johnson's plan was overridden by Congress and the Civil Rights Act
  • The 14th Amendment was approved by Congress and it was added to the Constitution

  • On July 28th, 1866 U.S. Secret Service started an investigation of the Ku Klux Klan
  • On July 30th, 1866 the Ku Klux Klan was formed to intimidate African Americans and to restore white rule

  • In 1866 British regulars, white settlers, and Maori loyalists defeat a Maori rebellion

  • In 1866 in Hawaii the first plantation workers arrived
  • 85% of them are from China, (470 males and 52 females) and from Japan 148 laborers arrived

  • On Feb. 3rd, 1865 the 15th Amendment was ratified and giving blacks the right to vote

  • On Feb. 23rd, 1870 Hiram Revels was elected to become the first black senator

  • In July of 1870 there were beliefs that war will arouse nationalist fervor and to serve and to unite independent German states with Prussia
  • Franco-Prussian War began
  • In Sept. of 1870 Prussians defeat the French and capture the French emperor

  • In 1870 Britain, France, Germany, Austria, and Scandinavian countries trade is relative to the population size and it has increased four to five times from what it was back in 1830

  • On Sept. 18, 1873 there was a economic depression that began in New York when the stock market crashed that setted off a financial panic that caused bank failures
  • The depression continued for five years

  • In 1873 Japan wanted to catch up with the West in modernization
  • Meiji government declares religious freedom and ends Confucianism

  • In 1873 Russia's government orders students in Switzerland to return to Russia
  • Returning students launch a "To The People" movement which will revolutionize society

  • The Democratic Party regain control of the House of Representatives

  • On Nov. 25th, 1874 the farmers organized the U.S. Greenback party which was organized as a political organization and the party was for the farmers who were hurt financially in the Panic of 1873

  • In 1874 Britain makes a colony of coastal territory that was 100 kilometers deep and 400 kilometers wide
  • A British commander had his troops wear brown jackets and khaki trousers rather than traditional red coats

  • The votes were disputed in four other states that force Congress to declare Hayes the winner
  • Republicans agree to end Reconstruction in the South

  • In 1876 there was a rebellion against the Ottoman rule had spread to Bulgaria
  • Reformist group in Turkey deposes Sultan Abd Al-Aziz
  • Murad V became Sultan but he is declared insane
  • Abd Al-Hamid becomes sultan and he accepts the new Constitution

  • In 1876 Japan forced the Koreans to accept a trade agreement

  • On Mar. 1st, 1877 Reconstruction ends

  • In 1877 Agrarian and samurai revolts against government reforms have been defeated
  • Largest being the Satsuma Rebellion

  • In 1877 The British needed to protect the Boers ( Afrikaners of Dutch, French, and German descent) from the Zulus and to repair the Boer republic financially

  • Queen Victoria urges "kind and generous treatment of Cetshwayo",who was exiled to Cape Town

  • In 1879 Europe was interested in peace among their powers
  • Bismarck joins Germany with Austria-Hungary in a defensive alliance

  • There was also an increase of 30.2% that was over the census records from 1870

  • On Nov. 2nd, 1880 James A. Garfield was elected president
  • Garfield barely won the majority of only 7,023 voters

  • In 1880 After many attempts to kill Alexander II
  • Radicals failed again, blowing up the dining room at the tsar's place, killing eleven people and wounding fifty-six people
  • The police arrested many members of the group "Will Of The People", almost destroying the organization

  • In 1880 The industrialization of food began with new technology that was replacing the stone grinding of grains
  • Oil in flour will quickly turn rancid, so it's been removed
  • The new flour has no valuable nutrients, which is unknown to the processing of grains
  • Vitamins haven't been discovered until the 1930s
